Make Personal Identity Information More Secure, Industry Group Says
Quick, find every location where employees' Social Security numbers reside in your system and which applications access them. A new industry standard, seeded by Oracle and joined by Sun, Computer Associates, Novell, and others, aims to make the task much easier than it is today.
Managing sensitive identity data in a heterogeneous environment is a universal IT challenge. The challenge grows more urgent when regulatory auditors ask to see just how this identity information is being stored and used. Because it is involved in IT infrastructure, middleware, and applications, Oracle was able to use its unique perspective to draft specifications for an Identity Governance Framework (IGF) and made it available to the wider software community.
The IGF is an open initiative that addresses the governance of identity-related information across enterprise IT systems. The IGF specifications provide a common framework for defining usage policies, attribute requirements, and developer APIs pertaining to identity-related information. These enable businesses to ensure full documentation, control, and auditing of the use, storage, and propagation of identity-related data across systems and applications.
Computer Associates, Layer 7 Technologies, Novell, Ping Identity, Securent, and Sun Microsystems have joined Oracle in pushing for the new industry standard.
