AMD, Oracle Execs Say Opteron Processor Drives Down TCO for Customers
From computing power to energy efficiency, AMD's Opteron processor-based systems are helping Oracle On Demand significantly drive down total cost of ownership (TCO) for its customers.
In a lively discussion at Oracle OpenWorld 2006, Hector de J. Ruiz, chairman and CEO of AMD, and Juergen Rottler, EVP of Oracle On Demand, delved into the benefits to customers from their companies' partnership. (Watch highlights of the discussion here.
"We saw that deploying AMD64 technology could help us drive down TCO for our customers while meeting their need for greater processing power," Rottler said. "By increasing the number of end users we can handle on a given configuration, we drive down costs," Rottler added.
And Oracle On Demand customers benefit from the adoption of advanced technology without having to surmount the usual steep learning curve.
"We do the hard work in the background," Rottler said. Capabilities and capacity can be simply "turned on" as customers require it. "As one of our [Oracle] On Demand customers told me recently, they expect us to 'make the impossible routine'," Rottler noted.
"This is where our partnership with AMD comes in," Rottler added. "It leaves customers free to focus on strategic IT and business initiatives."
More Power, Less Energy
AMD Opteron technology continues to advance its pioneering work in super-powerful 64-bit computing, including new features that maximize performance-per-watt. The result is unparalleled energy efficiencies that further drive down costs for Oracle On Demand customers—and make a significant contribution to the environment.
"The fact that we could realize greater power usage efficiencies running the AMD Opteron processor made a real impact on our choice to partner with AMD for Oracle On Demand," Rottler said.
"Our Austin data center is committed to using green energy sources," Rottler added, "and in fact, 25 percent of the data center's power comes from green sources, for which we were awarded the EPA Green Energy Award."
"I had the honor of recently visiting the Oracle data center in Austin," Ruiz responded, "and it is a fine example of the operational excellence you've achieved with Oracle On Demand."
Who's Benefiting?
In his discussion with Ruiz, Rottler cited three customers who rely on Oracle On Demand to meet their rigorous demands for high-intensity, high-performance data processing.
"Worthington Steel and Hanover Compressor require real-time information to run their operations, so we've migrated them to AMD 64-bit Opteron processors," Rottler said.
Oracle On Demand is also helping Integra, a fast-growing medical device company, provide the tools clinicians need to cure patients.
"We're providing Integra with the IT capabilities they need to continue to focus on innovating and operating within the highly regulated life sciences industry," Rottler said.
