Product Preview: Oracle Advanced Procurement Release 12.0 Helps Drive Procurement Transformation

Meg Lloyd, Oracle's vice president of applications development, told Oracle OpenWorld attendees in San Francisco this past October that procurement professionals are fundamentally changing the way they do business as they face new supply challenges, execute new organizational charters, and learn to leverage new technologies.

According to Lloyd, as these forces converge, procurement departments find themselves playing strategic roles, and are increasingly forced to find new ways of automating low-value tasks. Ultimately, procurement professionals are becoming developers of collaborative procurement and supply optimization strategies.

Oracle Advanced Procurement Release 12.0
Lloyd previewed Oracle Advanced Procurement Release 12.0, dubbed the "Procurement Professional's Release," scheduled for release in 2007.

This release was designed to meet the changing needs of procurement professionals by including a consolidated workcenter for all procurement responsibilities, improved support for complex goods and services, and expanded supplier management and enablement.

Professional Buyer's Work Center
Oracle Advanced Procurement Release 12.0 introduces the Professional Buyer's Work Center, which consolidates procurement responsibilities into a single command-and-control environment. For example, a procurement executive could execute all aspects of supply management, including supplier performance management, strategic sourcing, contract management, and supplier enablement, from a single workbench. The Professional Buyer's Work Center is expected to offer a new user experience with a significantly improved look and feel, increased personalization options, streamlined workflows, and simplified navigation.

Increased Support for Complex Goods and Services
Oracle Advanced Procurement Release 12.0 is also targeted to offer increased support for complex goods and services. New capabilities are designed to better align procurement and finance operations for improved of supplier performance and control over payment for complex services. For example, customers will benefit from extensive support for progress payments including rate, lump sum, and milestone pay items that can automatically track project and accounting details.

Expanded Supplier Management and Enablement
Oracle Advanced Procurement Release 12.0 is expected to include enhancements that improve the interaction between procurement professionals and suppliers. For example, buying organizations should be able to drive improvements in supplier performance by providing shared views to "Supplier Scorecards" that offer insight into performance against key performance indicators. This latest release also gives procurement professionals the opportunity to reduce the burden of tactical purchase order management by automatically approving supplier change requests that fall within established parameters. It is also planned that this release will provide expanded supplier self-service, including prospective supplier registration, account administration, and catalog authoring.

"Together these and other enhancements could help procurement departments improve supplier development and collaboration efforts, increase procurement automation, and strengthen compliance," Lloyd says.
