New Capabilities in Oracle Transportation Management Cut Costs, Improve Customer Service

The new Oracle Transportation Management 5.5, which incorporates core technology from Oracle's acquisition of G-Log late last year, helps planners make better decisions through new modeling tools and optimization algorithms that help companies cut costs and improve customer service through better upfront scheduling and loading strategies.

The application feeds a growing demand for technology that can help companies get the most out of their transportation alternatives. "Customer demand for transportation management systems remains strong, driven by rising fuel costs, shrinking order-to-delivery cycle times, and capacity constraints," says Adrian Gonzalez, ARC advisory group director for the Logistics Executive Council.

Oracle Transportation Management 5.5 streamlines global transportation planning and execution, freight payment, and business process automation across all transportation modes, including highway, air, ocean, and rail routes.

Integrated with Oracle E-Business Suite, On Demand, or Standalone
Oracle Transportation Management 5.5 is now available as a component integrated within Oracle E-Business Suite Logistics 11i.10. Companies may also choose to install it as a standalone program to run with non-Oracle applications. The application is also available as an Oracle On Demand service.

New Capabilities Support Successful Planning
Successful transportation management isn't about what happens as trucks travel from point A to point B. It hinges on decisions that planners make before the vehicles even leave the loading dockings.

The latest version offers four key additions:

  • 3D load modeling. To keep costs low, companies need to pack the maximum amount of boxes, pallets, and other shipped items in trailers. Planners also must ensure that goods can be unloaded from the vehicles efficiently, especially when trucks make multiple stops. The Oracle Transportation Management 5.5 modeler lets shipping managers analyze and orient items onscreen to determine the best placements before goods are actually loaded into a trailer. "How companies physically arrange those products in the trailer will determine how well they maximize all the available space," says Derek Gittoes, Oracle's director of transportation product strategy.
  • Dock and yard management. The application helps planners accurately manage the arrivals and departures of trucks from their facilities to keep loads moving efficiently and prevent bottlenecks.
  • Wireless carrier communications. Oracle Transportation Management 5.5 users can stay in touch with service providers in remote locations or when vehicles are without onboard systems.
  • Cooperative routing. Embedded algorithms within Oracle Transportation Management 5.5 help planners decide when to ship direct, use third-party services, or mix the two alternatives.
