Oracle Database for SAP: Data Guard

Oracle Data Guard is software available with the database, that creates, maintains, and monitors one or more standby databases to protect enterprise data from failures, disasters, errors, and corruptions. Data Guard maintains these standby databases as synchronized copies of the production database. These standby databases can be located at remote disaster recovery sites thousands of miles away from the production data center, or they may be located in the same city, same campus, or even in the same building. If the production database becomes unavailable because of a planned or an unplanned outage, Data Guard can switch any standby database to the production role, thus minimizing the downtime associated with the outage, and preventing any data loss.

DATA GUARD FOR DESASTER RECOVERY

When the primary database crashes and all other components – e.g. SAP application instances – are still alive, you can easily switch your SAP application servers to be connected to the opened standby database and, depending on the protection mode, you may not need to wait for any apply of database changes. Failover of the SAP instances happens in a smooth way by using specific and already prepared SAP profiles or even better by using virtual IP address for the database server.

DATA GUARD FOR BACKUP OR REPORTING

The main advantage of the standby database is that you do not have to perform backups in the primary (that is, production) database system. Instead, a standby database enables you to back up the data files of the standby database. Therefore, database backups do not increase the load on the host of the primary database instance in any way. Since production operation does not occur on the standby database, all host resources can be made available for the database backup. The SAP tool BRBACKUP can support you when backing up the data in the standby database.

A standby database can also act as a read/write database for testing, training, or reporting by using Flashback Database after completion of the desired task to rewind the standby database to its initial state and to serve as potential disaster recovery site as before.
