![]() Accelerating The Software ExperienceOracle President Charles Phillips gives an overview of the state of Oracle's three main businesses: database, middleware, and applications, attributing part of Oracle's growth and success to the way Oracle has successfully integrated proven, seasoned software providers—from PeopleSoft and Siebel to Hyperion and Agile—to extend Oracle's customer base, offerings, and enterprise computing ecosystem. Joined on stage by Chuck Rozwat, Phillips demos how Oracle Application Integration Architecture aligns applications data across the enterprise, allowing a CEO to easily connect data in multiple systems to get a real-time view of the enterprise. Finally, he previews Oracle VM—server virtualization software which fully supports both Oracle and non-Oracle applications, and is three times more efficient than other server virtualization products.

The answer is a series of innovations in Oracle Database 11g, including native support for radio-frequency identification (RFID), medical imaging, and 3-D spatial data, and the extension of Oracle Database 10g's support for XML to a binary XML format. Mendelsohn also reviews Oracle Database 11g's Real Application Testing, which lets companies capture and replay workloads to fine-tune changes before going live, Oracle Active Data Guard, a tool for creating real-time replicas of the production database, and new techniques for partitioning and compression, which in addition to boosting performance helps organizations lower their IT costs. Finally, Mendelsohn talks with key Oracle Database 11g customers.

Kurian notes how grid computing now encompasses software patching and other maintenance chores, and includes advanced tools for managing workloads and identifying and eliminating bottlenecks. ![]() Oracle Applications—Enabling Business InnovationEd Abbo, senior vice president for Oracle application development, tells attendees that choice in the Oracle Applications context means letting end users not only decide what applications to use but also how they use them. Oracle plans to offer a steady stream of applications with new features inspired by Web 2.0 innovations that will encourage organizations to adopt the new programs. Abbo also discusses Oracle Application Integration Architecture, noting that Oracle is identifying key processes for a range of vertical industries and building process integration packs for each one. Turning to social networking, Abbo says these new tools for easier collaboration aren't just for consumers but can also help companies close sales more quickly and formulate strategies for prioritizing business opportunities. Finally, he discusses how teaming with Google and supporting that company's OpenSocial interface standard will further Oracle's plan to offer pluggable gadgets and end-user customizations to enterprise applications such as customer relationship management programs.

Schwartz and Steve Wilson, vice president of connected systems management at Sun Microsystems, conduct a live demo of xVM with a data center in Denver, Colorado. In other announcements of the keynote, Dell CEO Michael Dell and Schwartz announced that Dell will make Sun's Solaris 10 operating system and Solaris support services available directly to customers for Dell PowerEdge servers. The companies will also work together to certify systems and create products based on the Solaris partnership.

Server virtualization, what Dell calls "the hottest thing going in IT today," reduces power consumption, cooling requirements, and data center complexity: With the help of Kevin Kettler, Dell CTO, Dell demonstrates a server running the newly announced Oracle VM. Dell also showed ImageDirect, Dell's new Web tool for managing multiple computer images. Dell also describes his company's On-Demand Desktop Streaming, or what he called "the next-generation enterprise client;" and announces a new Dell tablet PC with "multitouch" technology to allow users to use more than one finger to perform tasks like resizing and rotating photos, scheduled for release in 2008.

![]() The CEO KeynoteAddressing the largest crowd in Oracle OpenWorld history, Ellison leads his keynote with an update on the success of Oracle Unbreakable Linux and the introduction of Oracle VM server virtualization. The presentation focuses next on Oracle Fusion Applications. "Starting in 2008, virtually all of our new applications that come out are Fusion Applications, and are built on industry-standard middleware with a service-oriented architecture," says Ellison. Ellison then introduces Oracle's Anthony Lye, senior vice president, CRM On Demand, who demos the first three Oracle Fusion Applications, which are part of Sales Force Automation (SFA): Sales Prospector, Sales References, and Sales Tools. Finally, Ellison fields questions from the audience on topics including processor licensing, anecdotes from Oracle's 30th anniversary, and what lies in the future for IT.
