IBM WebSphere is 44%-51% more costly than Oracle WebLogic
Crimson Consulting Group just published a whitepaper, titled “Oracle WebLogic vs. IBM WebSphere TCO Comparison.” In this whitepaper Crimson estimated that IBM WebSphere and related products are between 44% to 51% more costly than Oracle WebLogic over a five year horizon. This cost differential is primarily due to three factors:
-
- Oracle’s performance advantage of 10-30%, which means less hardware, software, and support costs for the same workloads.
- Oracle’s cohesive approach to application platform design, which reduces operational costs (OpEx). The ongoing operational costs for IBM WebSphere were between 41% and 43% higher than Oracle WebLogic.
- IBM’s higher personnel costs and dependence on professional services, which raises “people costs” and reduces agility. IBM personnel costs are 50% more expensive.
The conclusions were based on in-depth interviews of IT professionals with extensive experience of application server and data grid deployments. Please use this Crimson whitepaper when you’re in a WebLogic deal against IBM. It can be shared externally with your prospect.

|
| VALUE OF SOA SPECIALIZATION INTERVIEW WITH JAG PUTTANNA CEO OF XTRON(PART-IV) |
|
”We are excited to announce the Oracle partner network recognition. This program gives a unique advantage to position XTRON in the north american region. We have a strategic focus on oracle fusion middleware including Oracle SOA Suite. Getting this SOA specialization re-assures customers that XTRON is geared up and committed to deliver. This would also enable our customers to confidently work with a great company and people who are certified, specialized and committed for great quality.” said Jag Puttanna, CEO of XTRON.
Why did XTRON decide to become SOA specialized?
SOA specialization gives a unique positioning to differentiate our services among the Oracle partners. XTRON is among the first 13 partners in north america to achieve SOA specialization.
Can you describe the marketing activities with Oracle?
We have used various marketing kits for lead generation activities. We saved significant time and efforts to launch new campaigns.
How did you team with Oracle around the sales activities?
Sales alignment is the ultimate key behind our success. Our business development team is aligned with regional channel and sales managers. We also had our presence at various events like Special Interest User Group (SIG) etc.
Did you get Oracle support to train your consultants in the Oracle SOA Suite?
Oracle competency portal has been extremely useful to train our consultants. Prerecorded webinars and guided learning path has been the key behind implementation exams. Our consultants also participated at various OTN developer day and live virtual classes.
What are the next steps for XTRON?
We are looking forward to develop competency in newer offerings like CEP, Webcenter and Application Grid. Exalogic is another exiting area to begin and explore. We would continue to invest and strengthen our relation with Oracle.

A word from Hilcona AG
With the help of Oracle SOA Suite, we transformed our handheld warehouse solution and achieved far better performance, more comfortable handling, high flexibility, and full integration with our core, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, ERP system.” – Thomas Ritter, Head of Applications, Hilcona AG.
-
- Replace a third-party data collection software used for registering all warehouse transactions of finished and semi-finished food products that was expensive to maintain and only provided point-to-point integration
- Enhance performance of the existing handheld solution for storekeepers and provide better integration with the core enterprise resource planning (ERP) system
- Enable seamless integration of process enhancements or new food products into a homogeneous and future-proof IT system
Solutions
Oracle Product and Services
-
- Worked with Oracle Partner Centric IT Solutions throughout the six month implementation, from scoping, to go-live support
- Redesigned warehouse processes and implemented Oracle SOA suite to ensure transactional warehouse data is collected only once and reflected directly in the core ERP system, which is deployed on Oracle’s JD Edwards enterpriseOne
- Leveraged Oracle SOA suite to develop communication scripts for handhelds used by warehouse employees to deliver instant bar-coded information to the core ERP system regarding warehouse transactions of finished and semifinished products, using standard Web technology with HTML visualization
- Streamlined work order processing by enabling warehouse staff to access most JD Edwards EnterpriseOne business functions on their mobile devices through web services developed with Oracle BPEL process manager
- Enhanced the functional scope, performance, and stability of mobile devices used by storekeepers, optimizing the user experience while lowering maintenance costs and efforts
- Developed process and user documentation with Oracle user productivity kit to optimize system usage and error analysis

| TOP MODEL- OPEN MARKET MODEL(OMM) |
|
The fist step to become SOA specialized is to proof two transactions. You can either resell, co-sell or referral – as a proof point we do use our Open Market Model (OMM). Additional OMM optimizes the relationship between Oracle's partners and end customers. Three types of cooperation are possible: Resale, Referral and Co-sell. Klaus Lehmann, OMM, outlines the benefits of the projects in the following video:

| IDC MARKETSCAPE WORLDWIDE BUSINESS PROCESS PLATFORMS 2011 ANALYSIS |
|
IDC has published a report on Marketscape Worldwide Business Process Platforms 2011 Analysis that assesses the capabilities of vendors to support mid-range to complex process improvement scenarios. BP platforms provide development and runtime environments to improve and automate a wide range of processes and support advanced use cases around orchestration, case management, process interoperability, end-to-end process monitoring, and event-driven process management. That means BP platforms are capable of combining people- and system-centric use cases. Oracle is a top performer in strategies and capabilities with BPM Suite 11g.
Oracle Summary:
Oracle as a market leader for Business Process Platform and Oracle BPM Suite is a top performer across each product category. "Oracle was named a leader in this IDC MarketScape because of its technical functionality as a platform, sophisticated user interface, business functionality in its process layer, and business execution capabilities. We believe Oracle is a very strong option for enterprises investing strategically in BPM automation technology"(Source:IDC MarketScape: Business Process Platforms 2011 Vendor Analysis – Maureen Fleming, Jeff Silverstein – June 22, 2011).
Oracle BPM Suite as an important component of Oracle Fusion Applications:“The suite has a high degree of interoperability and reusability built into it, which is logical when there is a need to support applications that are architected to be composed rather than traditionally built through coding and connection to a data model and relational database. The benefit of this design translates to Oracle BPM Suite customers that gain a great deal of the sophisticated out-of-the-box features that were required to support the Oracle Fusion Applications development effort” (Source: IDC MarketScape: Business Process Platforms 2011 Vendor Analysis – Maureen Fleming, Jeff Silverstein – June 22, 2011).
IDC believes Oracle will continue to increase its BPM market share, capabilities, and that Oracle is a very strong vendor to enterprises looking to invest strategically in BPM automation technology.
Strengths:
• Strong out-of-box functionality, comprehensive functionality, sophisticated user interface, comprehensive reporting, high scores for the technology platform and good combination of fact-based discovery with financially based assessment tools.
Cautions:
• Lack of: user-initiated case management, cloud offering, new versioning and rollback capabilities and greater adoption of social mechanisms into the user interface.
• IDC does state “these are the types of capabilities that are on Oracle's road map, and we expect to see gradual adoption over the next 18–24 months” (Source: IDC MarketScape: Business Process Platforms 2011 Vendor Analysis – Maureen Fleming, Jeff Silverstein – June 22, 2011).

| SOCIAL BPM HANDBOOK 2011 |
|
While social technologies have exploded in personal sphere, and business process management is an inherently social and collaborative enterprise and is the logical target for convergence with social technologies, this convergence, popularly referred as social BPM is not yet well understood. Therefore, it is very timely that future strategies is publishing a book on Social BPM as part of its BPM and Workflow Handbook series in June 2011 bringing together articles from industry experts.
I was fortunate to author an article in this book along with Linus Chow. The title of our article is: Next Generation BPM Suites – Social and Collaborative; the title is indicative of the case we make in this article. Our thesis is that social BPM will not only change process modeling and collaborative process work, it will also expand the reach of BPM to new types of processes, as well as could possibly change the very nature of social communications. An excerpt from this article:
One of the most compelling promises that social BPM holds is the ability to enable such adhoc and collaborative processes, bringing together the structured and unstructured, and completing the realm of BPM effectiveness. For example, Oracle BPM Suite 11g enables the creation of a collaboration space, called instance space, for every process instance or case, to facilitate the adhoc collaboration within a process. Within this space, process or case workers can not only access the process tasks and data, but also collaborate with each other via discussions, documents, wikis, etc. The benefit of this is that all the collaboration is now happening within the context of the process instance or case; this provides all stakeholders complete visibility into such collaboration, decisions and actions can be traced to the adhoc collaboration, and the collaboration can be archived along with the process instance or case log. F! inally, the process stakeholders as determined by the process model can be automatically given the appropriate privileges to the collaboration space, helping the process worker identify who to collaborate with as well as making sure that all relevant parties are involved and informed.
The book will be launched at the Social Business Forum in Milan on June 8th; unfortunately, I will not be there. I am looking forward to getting a copy of the book and reading the other articles. If you decide to get the book, then I wish you happy reading!
