SAP CERTIFIED ON EXADATA AND EXALOGIC
As of the 16 of August, 2011, All SAP products based on SAP NetWeaver 7.x that are also certified for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 can now be used with the Oracle Exadata Database Machine and the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud
KEY TAKE-AWAYS:
- Oracle customers that also have SAP deployments may now use Oracle Exalogic and Exadata as their standard platform for both Oracle and SAP applications and middleware
- The primary value of running SAP on Exalogic/Exadata is the turn-key simplicity, reliability and scalability of the Exalogic/Exadata Engineered System(s)
- SAP performance on the combined Exalogic/Exadata platform is comparable with other high-end platforms recommended by SAP
- SAP has *NOT* made any optimizations for Oracle Exalogic and Exadata and we are not aware of any plans for them to do so
- SAP has *NOT* become a value added reseller for Exalogic and/or Exadata
Additional nformation (From SAP):
The following restrictions on the usage of Exalogic apply:
- SAP NetWeaver 7.x or higher including SAP products which are based on SAP NetWeaver 7.x. Please check the SAP Product Availability Matrix ( www.service.sap.com/PAM) for details regarding supported SAP product releases
- Only Three-Tier SAP installations. SAP instances run on Oracle Exalogic. The Oracle database for SAP must run on Oracle Exadata. Oracle Exalogic can only be used in combination with Oracle Exadata and may not be used in combination with other database server hardware or other non-Oracle databases
- Only Unicode installations of SAP Software
- Oracle Exalogic X2-2 models only
Oracle Linux only on Oracle Exalogic. Minimum Oracle Linux 5 Update 5 (support for both kernels i.e. RHEL compatible and Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK)). Solaris 11 support is planned for late Q4CY2011
- Minimum Oracle Database Release 11g Release 2 Patchset 1

JBOSS APPLICATION SERVER COSTS MORE THAN WEBLOGIC SERVER AFTER 2 YEARS AND AS MUCH AS 35% MORE OVER 5 YEARS

This cost differential is primarily due to the following reasons:
- Oracle WebLogic Server enjoys significant ease-of-use and productivity advantages over JBoss, enabled by a robust array of available tools for configuration, administration, and management.
- These ease-of-use and productivity advantages translate to savings in both the time and the cost of the people required to implement, administrate, and operate the system – resulting in the 35 percent savings versus performing the same activities with JBoss.
According to Crimson, “The cost advantage that JBoss enjoys by offering free software is cut in half by the time the application goes live for the first time, cut in half again by the end of the first year after purchase, and completely eliminated before the 18-months-from-purchase mark. From that point onwards, WebLogic Server is less expensive on a TCO basis – an advantage that grows every year, based on its 50 percent per year operating cost advantage.”

IBM WEBSPHERE IS 44%-51% MORE COSTLY THAN ORACLE WEBLOGIC
Crimson Consulting Group just published a whitepaper, titled “ Oracle WebLogic vs. IBM WebSphere TCO Comparison.” In this whitepaper Crimson estimated that IBM WebSphere and related products are between 44% to 51% more costly than Oracle WebLogic over a five year horizon. This cost differential is primarily due to three factors:
- Oracle’s performance advantage of 10-30%, which means less hardware, software, and support costs for the same workloads.
- Oracle’s cohesive approach to application platform design, which reduces operational costs (OpEx). The ongoing operational costs for IBM WebSphere were between 41% and 43% higher than Oracle WebLogic.
- IBM’s higher personnel costs and dependence on professional services, which raises “people costs” and reduces agility. IBM personnel costs are 50% more expensive.
The conclusions were based on in-depth interviews of IT professionals with extensive experience of application server and data grid deployments. Please use this Crimson whitepaper when you’re in a WebLogic deal against IBM. It can be shared externally with your prospect.
