SPARC T3-1B Blade Demonstrates Outstanding Performance with Oracle WebLogic Server 11g

BENCHMARK SUMMARY

(As of Tuesday, 5 May 2011)

Oracle's SPARC T3-1B blade running an Avitek Medical Records (MedRec) Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application on Oracle WebLogic Server 11g, and Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M5000 servers running Oracle Database 11g Release 2, demonstrated excellent scaling and doubled the performance of the previous-generation SPARC blade.

This SPARC-based solution runs Oracle Solaris with Zones and provides customers with high performance and scalability in a compact form factor that allows flexible, secure, and lightweight implementation of the application tier.

BENCHMARK DESCRIPTION

MedRec is an Oracle WebLogic Server 11g sample application suite that showcases the use of each J2EE component and illustrates best-practice design patterns for component interaction and client development.

The MedRec application provides a framework for patients, doctors, and administrators to manage patient data and comprises of several Java EE modules supporting different user scenarios. MedRec provides controller and business logic, as well as the Web service used by different clients.

Patients log in to the patientWebApp application to register, edit their profile, or view medical records. Administrators use the adminWebApp application to approve or deny new patient profile requests. Physicians login to the physicianWebApp application to search and access patient profiles, create and review medical records, and prescribe medications. Each of these activities constitutes a single transaction where the performance metric of the MedRec applications reports the average transactions per second.

BENCHMARK OUTCOME

Performance Comparisons Table. Application tier is presented.

Server Processor Memory Maximum Transactions per second
SPARC T3-1B 1 x SPARC T3, 1.65 GHz, 16 cores 128 GB 28,156
SPARC T3-1B 1 x SPARC T3, 1.65 GHz, 8 cores 128 GB 14,030
Sun Blade T6320 1 x UltraSPARC T2, 1.4 GHz, 8 cores 64 GB 13,386
  • Oracle WebLogic Server 11g application server, a key component of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g, was used to demonstrate the performance of SPARC T3-1B blade running the Avitek MedRec sample application.
  • The SPARC Enterprise M5000 server was used as the database server for all tests above.
  • The Avitek MedRec application instances were deployed in Oracle Solaris Zones on the SPARC T3-1B server, allowing for a flexible, scalable, and lightweight architecture of the application tier.
  • The SPARC T3-1B server, running this real-world J2EE application on Oracle WebLogic Server 11g, together with a SPARC Enterprise M5000 server running Oracle Database 11g, demonstrated 2.1x times the transactional throughput over the previous generation of Oracle's Sun Blade T6320 server module equipped with UltraSPARC T2 processor.
  • The SPARC T3-1B server shows linear scaling as the number of cores is doubled.
  • These results demonstrate side-by-side comparison of two generation of SPARC-based blades and allow customers to see the value of the multithreaded designs offered by Oracle. The performance of each core remained about the same while the overall performance of the blade system more than doubled. With up to 10 SPARC T3-1B modules installed in Oracle's standard Sun Blade 6000 chassis customers can scale their application infrastructure horizontally.
