UnitSpace Speeds Adoption of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs)

Moscow-based Oracle Partner UnitSpace has developed a first-ever service-oriented middleware solution that can help independent software vendors worldwide to build their solutions on a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA).

UnitSpace BCR runs on Oracle 10g Database and Application Server. It provides software developers with an autonomous platform for service modeling, delivery and management. What sets it apart from other Web services tools is its declarative approach to service composition and versioning, which requires no Web services development skills or coding effort to create and deliver high-quality, secure and manageable services.

What sets UnitSpace BCR apart from other Web services tools is its declarative approach to service delivery

The launch of the product comes at a time when most enterprises are trying to integrate data from disparate applications in the most cost-effective and least disruptive way possible. UnitSpace sees its product as a strong solution for ISVs who want to make their applications easily integrable into heterogeneous IT environments.

"We have long realized that application infrastructure build-out, characteristic of the past decades, was unsustainable, because it created barriers to information flows inside companies and between them," said Igor Ryabenkiy, UnitSpace founder and President. "We created UnitSpace BCR Server ISV Edition to enable ISVs to employ the same kind of service-oriented architectures that are being used by the world's major software vendors to provide dynamic interfaces from their software to data in different business applications."

"Software developers have to realize that their application is not the only one in their client's IT infrastructure, so all of its business-critical information has to be discoverable and accessible using applicable protocol and format standards," stresses Daniel Feygin, Director of R&D at UnitSpace.

"Intrinsic support for industry-standard Web services integration techniques promises to make business integration faster, cheaper and easier, while vitally enhancing application value," he says. "One of the key competitive advantages an application may have these days is its ability to be seamlessly integrated into the overall business information architecture."

UnitSpace BCR goes a step further than traditional development tools, extending the familiar Oracle 10g platform with an innovative service foundry layer, which has its own pre-packaged metadata-driven Web services, state-of-the-art management and novel integration technology.

Unlike other service-oriented integration middleware, UnitSpace BCR not only ties the various applications' services together, it also creates those services if they do not already exist. It can run alongside or be embedded inside business applications to provide Web services-based access to information in production systems without disrupting their operation. Web services hosted on UnitSpace BCR are instrumented for manageability, security, performance and high quality of service.

UnitSpace originally built its product for the Microsoft .NET environment, but soon realised that this limited the size of the potential market for its solution.

"We decided to move to Oracle because of the cross-platform support that we would gain," says Daniel Feygin. "Now we are able to pursue a bigger market, because Oracle runs on all platforms, whereas .NET restricted us to Microsoft Windows. Oracle is also recognised as the world leader in data management technology, and so proved to be the better choice for our data-centric solution."

Oracle 10g's virtualisation features and platform-independence give UnitSpace's ISV customers scalability and freedom to implement their solutions for any industry and company size. Availability of licensable platform options, such as Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), which adds a fault tolerance capability, greatly enhances the value of the overall solution. Advanced self-management features of Oracle 10g Database allow ISV's to make UnitSpace BCR completely invisible to end users.

UnitSpace BCR represents a new generation of IT infrastructure software, which introduces a new architectural style that leverages SOA and Web services to achieve greater returns from implementing Web services while lowering the total cost of ownership.

ISV partner applications can use UnitSpace BCR to quickly publish new and existing business data along with the standardized metadata that describes it as schema-, platform- and location-independent services accessible by authorized parties anywhere on the Internet or on an enterprise network. Loose coupling inherent in the persistence-centered interaction model of UnitSpace BCR guarantees gentle error recovery, reliability of content delivery, flexibility and adaptability unmatched by restrictive MOM and EAI broker architectures.

Web services modelled and deployed on UnitSpace BCR feature 100% standards-based interoperability along with deployment flexibility, manageability and Oracle 10g-backed industry-leading availability. UnitSpace BCR is the most comprehensive, reliable and secure solution available for achieving manageable business interoperability across applications, corporate departments and IT infrastructures using distributed data persistence technology based on Web services.
