What
Oracle products are supported on AMD Opteron processor-based servers?
The current plan is:
- Immediate availability of Oracle9i
Database on 32-bit Linux for AMD Opteron
-
Oracle9i Database for 32-bit
Windows for AMD Opteron; and Oracle9i Application Server, Oracle Collaboration
Suite and Oracle E-Business Suite for 32-bit Linux and Windows are expected
over the next few months
-
Immediate availability of a
developers' version of Oracle9i Database on 64-bit Linux
-
Oracle intends to offer to select
customers a beta program for 64-bit computing on AMD Opteron processors
for the next major release of the Oracle database, based on the availability
of necessary Linux and Windows operating systems and other third party
products.

What
benefits will Oracle on AMD Opteron processor-based servers offer to customers?
Oracle provides an entire portfolio
of enterprise class software that is high performance, scalable, reliable
and has deep functionality. Customers that choose to run on AMD Opteron
processor-based servers will have all the benefits of Oracle's software,
as well as Oracle's leadership in the Linux space, all on a flexible platform
that lowers the cost of computing.
Oracle on AMD Opteron processor-based
servers provides:
-
Flexibility and Investment Protection
- Oracle on Opteron gives customers a flexible 64-bit migration strategy
- customers can run their 32-bit database and applications on Opteron processor
-based servers now and upgrade to 64-bit computing on the same servers
when ready
-
Performance - Oracle software
running on a 32-bit OS on Opteron, in our preliminary testing, can take
advantage of perfomance benefits of the 64-bit processor, and we expect
further upward potential in full 64-bit mode
-
Low Cost - Clusters of x-86
Opteron-based servers are low cost, yet provide scalability, reliability
and performance

What
advantages can a database server gain when moving from 32-bit to 64-bit
computing?
The primary benefit is higher
performance. An enterprise database, like Oracle9i Database, is very demanding
on a processor's computing ability, and 64-bit processors enable Oracle
to manager data in much larger chunks than with 32-bit processors

What operating
systems on AMD Opteron processor-based servers will Oracle support?
Oracle will run on all 32-bit
Windows operating systems that support AMD Opteron processor-based servers.
For 32-bit Linux, Oracle currently runs on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server
8 for AMD64. For 64-bit Linux, the developers' version of Oracle9i Database
runs on SuSE Enterprise Server 8 for AMD64.
