In 1909, the citizens of Kansas City, Kansas authorized the purchase of a privately owned water system to provide the community with better water service. The electric utility was placed in operation in late 1912. The purpose of the utility, then and to this day, is to provide the highest quality electric and water services at the lowest possible cost. The publicly owned utility currently serves approximately 65,000 electric and 51,000 water customers in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties of Kansas.
In the past, KCBPU spent millions of dollars per year on critical, preventative, and routine maintenance of complex and capital intensive electric and water production equipment. Clear and consistent data from these activities was sparse and existed in various disconnected systems. They sought to centralize data with a focus on efficiency and reliability to drive business decisions and aid budget planning.
