University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) is an award-winning healthcare system made up of: hospitals and health centers including University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Women’s Hospital, and 30 health centers and 120 outpatient clinics; the University of Michigan Medical School and its Faculty Group Practice; and Michigan Health Corp., the legal entity that allows the health system to enter into partnerships, affiliations, joint ventures, and other business activities. The organization is focused on excellence in patient care, medical education, and research.
UMHS needed to replace their outdated business intelligence system with a new, comprehensive, integrated tool set. OBIEE had the ability to support complex financial reporting for a hospital system that carries 48,000 inpatient and 1.5 million outpatient visits each year. It allows a variety of users to use the system with minimal training. UMHS worked with Oracle Consulting to implement Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, enabling more than 700 users—from the manager level to the chief executive officer—to pull an average of 3,000 to 4,000 queries each day. OBIEE allowed more than 500 customers to quickly generate reports on financial information, including patient days and billing codes, and improved insight into enterprise-wide data allowing UMHS to better understand trends and react accordingly.
