Oracle OLAP Newsletter Customer Feature

JD Sports Fashion PLC, in the UK, has implemented an Oracle Data Warehouse using Oracle OLAP cubes to provide greater levels of access to corporate information.  The solution gives business users significantly improved visibility of information and a dramatic increase in the speed of reporting. Importantly, users can now easily access data themselves and have flexibility in tailoring reports to suit their rapidly changing requirements.  The solution has been in use for 7 months for 30 users and is growing in scale and use.

Technical Solution:

The solution uses Oracle Database 10g Release 2 with OLAP option, to deliver fast and rich analysis of corporate information.  The solution also uses Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) which provides availability and scalability across 2 server nodes.

In total, around 500GB of data is held in 6 OLAP cubes using features such as cube compression and cube partitioning.  The largest cube (Stock) has approximately 300 million source records loaded and is aggregated across 10 dimensions and a total of 28 hierarchical levels.  Stock and Sales data for around 450,000 products is recorded at SKU level.  Cubes are refreshed on both a daily and weekly basis.  Additionally, the advanced calculation capability of the OLAP engine is used to deliver hundreds of dynamically calculated measures including time-series based comparisons, cumulative and year-to-date totals, variances and stock coverage.

Reporting capability is delivered using Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition.  Oracle Discoverer provides ad-hoc query and analysis functionality for power users.  Oracle BI Spreadsheet Add-In is used to display and navigate Oracle OLAP data from within Excel.  Oracle Reports with native OLAP connectivity is used to deliver pixel perfect reporting.  PDF reports are delivered directly to users by email, and parameter driven web pages are used to handle ad-hoc fixed format requests.

John Ingham, Oracle Team Leader of JD Sports, states “Implementing an Oracle Data Warehouse has been cost effective and efficient for us. Our large volume of data is managed and administered in one place. JD Sports Fashion plc now has one consistent version of the truth. The Oracle OLAP option gives business users simple and efficient access to advanced analytics using a selection of Oracle BI tools; the same data can be reported in many different ways and formats for the needs of various types of user."

He continues: " Our business functions now make better decisions supported by real data. We have a complete view of our sales and inventory, can rapidly react to the market, control our stock, and improve sales accordingly.”
