Case Study: Shire Pharmaceuticals Deploys Oracle Grid Computing Model to Lower Costs and Increase Reliability

Shire Pharmaceuticals (Shire) has standardized upon an Oracle Grid computing model for their data centers. Shire was able to reduce the number of database servers deployed by 50%, while meeting or exceeding their requirements for response time and availability. Their architecture includes:
  • Oracle Real Application Clusters with ASM for high availability and to virtualize the database tier.
  • A uniform multi-site disaster recovery solution spanning UK and US data centers using Oracle Data Guard.
  • A standardized backup and recovery strategy using Recovery Manager (RMAN).
  • Centralized management and monitoring of their database infrastructure using Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control.
Advans Technologies, a Solution Provider and IT Consulting company was engaged by Shire to design and deploy their Grid architecture. Advans utilized Oracle's high availability technologies and Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) best practices to virtualize Shire's database tier.
