Abstract: Deploying 3D City Models for Urban and Metropolitan Planning

View Presentation

Virtual 3D city models are complex mappings and inventories of the urban environment, which are being used in many different application fields like urban planning, environmental and training simulations, disaster management, and energy assessment. The 3D City Database (3DCityDB) is an Open Source geodatabase schema and set of tools for managing and visualization of large 3D city models. It is currently in use in many cities like Berlin, Zurich, Nuremberg, Potsdam, Rotterdam and in six different state mapping agencies in Germany. Interfaces to different commercial 3D GIS software systems exist. The included tools provide full support of the OGC standard CityGML and allow for KML / COLLADA exports in order to create 3D visualizations for Digital Virtual Globes like Google Earth.

The 3D City Database provides an object-relational schema for storing large and complex 3D city models originally described in CityGML. It uses Oracle Spatial as the data storage foundation, making extensive use of the SDO_GEOMETRY object type, spatial indexes, spatial queries, and coordinate systems transformation support. This presentation will explore the features, capabilities, and applications of 3DCityDB in detail.
