We will provide an overview of the Army Mapper system, the U.S. Army’s enterprise GIS supporting the overall management and resourcing of Army Installations worldwide.
Army Mapper has over 300,000 spatial layers across 200+ installations.Army Mapper data is stored in ArcSDE enabled Oracle Spatial schemas with support for concurrent live editing and publishing of data from Esri ArcGIS, Bentley Map, and GeoMedia Professional. Custom developed Oracle Spatial based procedures are used to:
An open source based Web map viewer makes this data available to a wider audience on the Web with advanced GIS and analytic capabilities supporting daily Army activities such as real property, training ranges, environmental cleanup and more.
An extensive security model is maintained through Oracle database accounts and roles to control access to this data at the installation level and for specific groups of spatial layers at the installation. In the future we are hoping to expand this model to include layer level permissions for sensitive layers. We hope to control that access all the way to the Web using database permissions to control the data displayed in the Web map viewer allowing only certain users to see more sensitive layers.
