Oracle Application Express is the native Web application development framework for the Oracle Database.  Since its inception in February 2004 as a feature of Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Application Express has seen tremendous uptake, with hundreds of thousands of downloads, and thousands of customers with secure, scalable web applications deployed into production.  Oracle Application Express is a standard database component of Oracle Database 11g and above.  Oracle continues to invest in the development and support of Oracle Application Express and new versions of Application Express will be released approximately once a year.  The following is a roadmap for the upcoming releases of Oracle Application Express.

Oracle Application Express 5.0

Oracle Application Express 5.0 will focus on both new features and enhancements to existing functionality to improve developer productivity and is planned to incorporate the following:

  • Page Designer - New page definition IDE which incoroporates tree controls, drag and drop layout editor, and a property editor.
  • Multiple Interactive Reports – Allow any number of Interactive Reports to be defined on a single page.
  • Modal Dialog - Enhance the ability to declaratively define modal dialogs.
  • Navigation Lists - Ability to define hierarchical lists for navigation, with pull-down menus and sub-menus, instead of being constrained by tabs.
  • Mobile - Enhanced responsive tables, including reflow tables and column toggles, and introduction of panels.
  • Calendar – New calendar region which allows duration based events, improved functionality, and better control over drag and drop operations.
  • Universal Theme – A new central theme which readily allows developers to customize simply using CSS.
  • HTML5 Capabilities – Improve native capabilities for handling HTML5 constructs.
  • Application Builder Security – Allow different authentication schemes to be used to control developer access to the Application Builder.
  • Numerous functional improvements.

Oracle Application Express 5.1

Certain features originally slated for Oracle Application Express 5.0 are now planned for Oracle Application Express 5.1 to ensure the quality of the features delivered. This release is planned to incorporate the following:

  • New Multi-Row Edit Region Type – Define a new region type with a modern UI for updating multiple rows of data and allow multiple regions on one page.
  • Master / Detail / Detail – Provide a wizard interface to define declarative master/detail/detail regions.
  • Tablet User Interface - Enhanced themes and templates to enable developers to declarative create applications and/or pages for tablet devices.
  • Web Services Support – In combination with the Oracle REST Data Services (previously known as the APEX Listener) further extend the Web Services integration capabilities.
  • PDF Printing – Improve the printing capabilities utilizing the Oracle REST Data Services FOP Support.
  • Packaged Applications - Improved framework and enhancements to the packaged applications.

apex.oracle.com

apex.oracle.com is a no-hassle, hosted version of Oracle Application Express provided to Oracle Technology Network subscribers.  Launched in June 2002, it provides a quick way to evaluate or experiment with Oracle Application Express, simply by signing up for a free workspace.  The service is a tremendous success, with more than 19,000 workspaces currently active.  Note that the apex.oracle.com environment is for demonstration purposes only. Deployment of production applications is prohibited.
