Building Next-Generation Phone Switches
Gluon Networks develops and markets next-generation networking products for telephone companies. Gluon Networks' solution, the Converged Local Exchange (CLX), is a powerful, high-capacity, broadband-enabled switch for voice and data services. The Gluon Networks Element Management System (EMS) provides the common management and maintenance infrastructure for the CLX.

The Gluon Networks EMS is based on a combination of Java, C++, SQL and XML that together enable the control and maintenance of the CLX. Java enables Gluon Networks to develop systems that are independent of the hardware platform and are not tied to a specific database for information storage. Gluon Networks reuses many components and frameworks already existing in the Java community.

High-Level Project Goals

•
Fast time-to-market
•
Platform independence
•
Manageable project with accurate documentation

Why Oracle?
Gluon Networks evaluated other Java development tools and decided to use Oracle9 i JDeveloper. "Most of our work is hard-core Java coding, and JDeveloper's code editor just felt better to our developers. Features like code templates and code insight makes our developers more productive when coding complex Java programs," says Bruno Rossi, EMS Software Architect at Gluon Networks. "Oracle9 i JDeveloper is quite unique with its full life cycle support, we can do UML modeling, Java coding, complex debugging and even deployment without leaving the JDeveloper's IDE."

Complex Development Gets Simpler
The Gluon Networks EMS is by no means a simple project; with over 3,000 files to manage and hundreds of Java classes, it is a very large development effort. Gluon Networks is using Oracle9 i JDeveloper for every aspect of their Java and XML development from modeling and reverse engineering of Java classes to writing Java code and manipulating XML information. Gluon Networks integrates Oracle9 i JDeveloper with third party technologies and products to achieve a complete environment. The Converged Local Exchange system is already in testing at customers' sites.

Future Plans
Gluon Networks is planning to integrate other Java technologies such as EJBs, and Servlets as well as the Oracle database in their future development. "Oracle9 i JDeveloper's support for the latest Java and XML standards is very important to us," says Bruno Rossi "We are going to use many of these technologies in future systems we'll build."
