Servicing Millions Over the Internet
Headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, Schober.com is the initiator and operator of a global network of leading data providers. The technological platform developed by the company allows different databases from the business, consumer and credit sectors to be networked and made available for various applications via Internet. schober.com AG's business activities are divided into three segments:
Information Providing - the provision of addresses and data both online and offline, e.g. for direct marketing, branch directories or CRM.
Information Intelligence Solutions - the development and provision of special solutions that make data and information available via Internet.

Marketplace Providing - the operation of Europe's leading marketplace for addresses and data.

The success of Schober.com's Internet portal encouraged Schober.com to look into additional value added services through other channels such as wireless and custom protocols. Schober.com wanted to create a new application, with different interfaces for various types of clients. It based its application on J2EE technology and implemented it as a Web Service with standardized XML interfaces for access from various kinds of clients. To meet its development requirements and for the necessary performance and scalability, Schober.com chose Oracle9 i JDeveloper and Oracle9 i Application Server.

High-Level Project Goals

•
Simplify customer interaction
•
Leverage industry standards
•
Multi-channel publishing support

Why Oracle?
"Oracle's Web services made it possible for us to implement the application we had in mind," says Schober.com's Business Development Manager,Volker Haeberlin. "The Oracle Web service offering includes a complete development and deployment environement. Oracle9 i JDeveloper is a highly productive Web services development environment, and Oracle9 i Application Server fully supports maintaining, publishing, and executing our Web services in a secure and reliable environment."

Rapid Web Services Development
"We already developed various JSP, PL/SQL, and XML-based applications, and we wanted to publish them as Web services". With the help of Oracle Consulting, Schober.com built a core set of modules that are exposed as Web Services. Haeberlin says that bringing new clients onboard and responding to their specific needs is simpler. "We don't have to provide any client software for new customers," Haeberlin says. "We simply provide them with XML documents that explain how to format requests and what the response files will look like. The clients are registered only for the Web services they want. Access, logging, billing, and failover services are all handled automatically by Web services." Adding new Web Services are quite easy - they simply require defining a specific set of XML document to format requests and responses and appropriate J2EE Program Logic to process the request. "Using standards such as WSDL, SOAP, and UDDI enabled us to offer our services in new markets."

Future plans
In August 2001, Schober.com launched several new services as Web services for its customers. It developed the Web services by using Oracle9 i JDeveloper and deployed them on Oracle9 iAS. More Web services are being developed and added over time to enhance Schober.com's offerings to its customers.
