Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g simplifies hardware management in Oracle’s Sun environments and reduces costs by as much as 90 percent.
Oracle has streamlined systems and virtualization management with the release of Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g, a solution for managing systems across traditional, virtualized, and cloud-based datacenter environments. Through a converged hardware management approach, the new release simplifies management tasks for all infrastructure assets. It delivers infrastructure and lifecycle management, as well as integrated support. And while Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g works as a standalone console, when combined with Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g it delivers complete applications-to-disk management.
“By making hardware and OS management more efficient, Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g can reduce management overhead by as much as 90 percent,” says Steve Wilson, vice president of systems management at Oracle.
Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g gives organizations the capability to maximize the value of their investments in Oracle’s Sun systems by managing across Sun virtual machines, operating systems, firmware, servers, clusters, storage, and network fabrics. (Management of storage devices, network switches, and clusters is new in this release.) Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g further simplifies IT operations by supporting management across heterogeneous operating system environments, including Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Linux, and SUSE Linux. It also manages Oracle’s engineered systems, Oracle Exadata and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud.
“We cover complete hardware monitoring for Oracle Exadata and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, giving you detailed hardware health monitoring and fault detection and helping you proactively drive up the availability on those systems,” says Wilson.
Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g delivers a range of lifecycle management capabilities, including end-to-end server deployment, advanced discovery and inventory, centralized alarm management, integrated virtualization management, energy performance management, and compliance management. In terms of deployment, Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g provides a complete solution for provisioning and patch automation for physical and virtual servers by providing end-to-end automated deployment plans.
“Patching is a huge headache,” says Wilson. “Regardless of what platform you’re using, new patches come out all the time. Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g simplifies the patching process dramatically. Our advanced analysis engine determines which patches are needed by which systems and then helps you safely roll them out across hundreds or thousands of servers.” Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g also manages the security and compliance side of patching, from deploying security patches to proving to an auditor that you are in compliance with a vendor’s latest recommended patches, Wilson explains.
In addition, Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g integrates virtualization management, with a centralized interface for lifecycle management of dynamic domains, Oracle VM Server for SPARC, and Oracle Solaris Containers. It also manages virtual storage and networks. “Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g provides a rich set of capabilities for creating new virtual machines, monitoring them throughout their lifecycle, and even doing complex operations like migrating them from one physical host to another,” says Wilson.
Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g is integrated with My Oracle Support, Oracle’s suite of online support tools, to provide integrated knowledge management, service request management, and configuration management. Now Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g users will be able to easily track warranty and support contract status on their servers. In addition, these new features make it fast and easy for users to manage their interactions with Oracle support when they need help or replacement parts.
“We’ve integrated Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center with My Oracle Support so that if Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center detects a fault in your hardware systems, it can automatically collect all the details on the fault and all the debugging information that Oracle will need to fix the problem and allows you to log a service request to Oracle so that you can get the help you need as quickly as possible,” Wilson says.
While Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g functions as a standalone console, it also works in concert with Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g to identify and resolve problems across the entire stack. A set of integrations between the two products enables real-time information on hardware status and alarms and integrated applications-to-disk compliance. These integrations also support an applications-to-disk management capability to deliver infrastructure awareness for application managers and application awareness for system administrators.
“The people who manage servers and storage will get visibility into what’s happening in the applications that they’ve never had before,” Wilson says. “And by the same token, the people who are administering applications, middleware, and databases now get visibility into what’s going on down in the virtualization and hardware layers.”
With the extensive integration work included in Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g, organizations will benefit from common management capabilities across Oracle’s hardware and software. “By providing a single, intuitive management console that spans a broad range of infrastructure and software assets, we are enabling customers to streamline operations, improve productivity, and dramatically reduce management costs,” Wilson concludes.
