Guidelines for Switching Look and Feel Designs

If you absolutely must switch look and feel designs, follow these guidelines.

How to Present the Choice

Place the choice of look and feel designs inside your application's preferences dialog box.

List your application's default look and feel first. If the default is the Java look and feel, it should be followed by the look and feel of the platform your application is most likely to run on. Make these choices radio button menu items because only one main look and feel can be active at any time.

Nomenclature

Always use "Java look and feel," not "Java" or "Metal." (Metal is the package name for the Java look and feel.)
