Information Module Profile (IMP), JSR 195 Overview
When combined with the
Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC), the Information Module Profile (IMP) provides a Java application environment for networked embedded devices that do not have rich graphical display capabilities, or whose resources are limited in other ways. Examples include emergency call boxes, parking meters, wireless modules in home alarm systems, and industrial metering devices.
Wireless modules can send alerts when vending machines need to be restocked, permit remote diagnosis of elevators and car wash systems, or allow remote reading of meteorological stations and electric meters.
In a package of standardized Java APIs, IMP provides the core application functionality needed by machine-to-machine applications, including network connectivity, local data storage, and application life-cycle management. Because the IMP specification is based on the
Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) specification, MIDP developers can transfer their expertise and application code to IMP easily.
