The purpose of this note is to give the reader a quick understanding of the steps to install and upgrade to OracleAS Portal 10g Release 2 (10.1.4), when they apply, the resources required, where to go to get the full instructions on how to perform the upgrade and any significant differences from previous upgrade paths.
This technical note applies to upgrades from the following OracleAS Portal Versions:
If running OracleAS Portal 10.1.2.0.0 or 10.1.2.0.1 then apply the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.1.0) patchset to bring the OracleAS Portal repository version to 10.1.2.0.2 before applying the OracleAS Portal 10g Release 2 (10.1.4) upgrade.

The steps can be summarized as follows:
The steps above are a high level overview that apply to most deployment configurations. Refer to the Oracle Application Server Portal Installation and Upgrade Guide 10g Release 2 (10.1.4) for a more detailed breakdown of the steps.
The major difference between the upgrade to OracleAS Portal 10g Release 2 (10.1.4) and past Oracle Application Server upgrades is that it is a Portal repository upgrade only. No updates occur to the middle tier, the infrastructure tier, or non Portal OracleAS Metadata Repository components.
Therefore the core guide to understanding the upgrade process is a Portal specific guide titled the Oracle Application Server Portal Installation and Upgrade Guide 10g Release 2 (10.1.4). It details the various steps and the order they should be performed in. The other documentation guides are supporting material which provide further information on some of the preparation steps that must be performed before the Portal repository can be upgraded.
In earlier release of Oracle Application Server, the Metadata Repository Upgrade Assistant (MRUA) was used to upgrade the Oracle Application Server component schemas in the OracleAS Metadata Repository. This upgrade uses the MRUA technology, but when applied to the OracleAS Metadata Repository, the software upgrades just the portal component and the required MRUA framework components. A command line option is also available for when the Portal repository is held in a customer database.
Error messages for the upgrade are also contained in the Oracle Application Server Portal Installation and Upgrade Guide 10g Release 2 (10.1.4) so there is no need to locate a separate guide as occurred in previous releases. Always check the upgrade log files after upgrading to determine if any errors occurred.
When performing the upgrade on a freshly installed environment with an empty Portal repository it is quicker to follow the steps in the installation chapter. This is because some assumptions can be made about the environment and therefore a shorter set of steps followed. But this shorter set of steps can only be followed in the installation scenario that is described in the guide.
For upgrade trouble shooting assistance refer to metalink note 334414.1.
The above is a summary of the major steps involved, resources required and differences from previous releases. For further details on the preparation and the Portal repository upgrade refer to the documentation mentioned above.
