Pre-built Virtual Machine for Oracle WebCenter Portal: Framework 11gR1 (11.1.1.4.0)


Overview


Please note this appliance is for testing purposes only, therefore it is unsupported and should not to be used in a production environment. Questions concerning this appliance should be posted to the OTN Forum: WebCenter Portal.

This Oracle VirtualBox appliance contains a fully configured, ready-to-use WebCenter Portal framework installation.  It has been tested on Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit, Linux, and Mac OS.  There are special considerations for Microsoft Windows XP (see below).

All you need to do to try out WebCenter Portal's framework is to install Oracle VirtualBox on your desktop/laptop and import the WebCenter appliance -- no installation and configuration required!  It is also REQUIRED to install the VirtualBox Extension Pack to get this VM working.

The following software is installed in this VirtualBox image:

  • Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 Update 5
  • Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition (11.2.0.1)
  • Oracle WebLogic Server (10.3.4.0)
  • Oracle WebCenter Portal Framework 11gR1 (11.1.1.4.0)
  • JDeveloper (11.1.1.4)
  • Oracle WebCenter Portal Extension for JDeveloper (11.1.1.4.0)
  • Oracle Universal Content Management 11g R1 (11.1.1.4.0)

Additionally, the AviTrust Demonstration (web site of a fictitious bank), and the Tutorial for Oracle WebCenter Developers have been included in the appliance.  Please review the README on the Oracle user's desktop for details about these two applications. 

Please follow the instructions below for downloading and importing the WebCenter Portal framework VirtualBox image.



Requirements

  • At least 3GB of RAM (recommended 6GB)
  • At least 30GB of free disk space (Note: virtualization works best with contiguous space so if using Windows as the host operating system, it is a good idea to run a defragmenting program, and make sure you are using NTFS for your file system to handle large files)
  • 2GHz processor


Setup Instructions - Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit, Mac OS, Linux


  1. Download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox. It is also REQUIRED to install the VirtualBox Extension Pack to get this VM working.
  2. Download the VM image files. Please note the md5 checksums in the REAVDD-HOL-WC.md5 file.
  3. The VM image files need to be extracted and combined to create two files: REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk (~3GB) & REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk (~11GB). Use 7-Zip to extract REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk.001 (it automatically uses the 002-005 files) - this creates REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk.  Use 7-Zip to extract REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk.001 (it automatically uses files 002-016) - this creates REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk.  (Note: If 7-zip shows it will extract a zip file instead of a vmdk file, then one or more of your downloaded files are corrupted.) REAVDD-HOL-WC.ovf does not need to be extracted.
    Use the following commands to extract these files. 
    • Windows:  Use 7-zip to open REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk.001.  Do the same for the "disk2" file by opening REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk.001 to re-create REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk.  7-zip will use all the necessary files to re-create the vmdk's.
    • Linux:  Use p7zip to open REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk.001  (Example command: 7za x REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk.001).   Do the same for the "disk2" file by openingREAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk.001 to re-create REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk. 7-zip will use all the necessary files to re-create the vmdk's.
    • Mac:  Use 7zX to open REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk.001.  Do the same for the "disk2" file by opening REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk.001 to re-create REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk. 7-zip will use all the necessary files to re-create the vmdk's.

    Now you should have 3 files, all in the same directory:
    • REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk1.vmdk
    • REAVDD-HOL-WC-disk2.vmdk
    • REAVDD-HOL-WC.ovf
  4. Start VirtualBox.  Using the VirtualBox Manager, validate that the default machine folder under general preferences is set to the location you want to use for the VM.
  5. From the VirtualBox Manager, import the VM (File-->Import Appliance).
  6. Click Choose... to browse the file system and select the file REAVDD-HOL-WC.ovf.
  7. Click Next.
  8. After viewing the Appliance Import Settings, click finish to begin the import.  It will prompt you to agree to the appropriate developer licenses while importing. You will see 'WebCenterPS3 - for VDDHOL (Powered Off)' when it is finished importing.
  9. To enable usage of the VM from the Host OS, or other clients, port forwarding has been enabled. Please use these steps to review the port settings.
    1. From the VirtualBox Manager, click the VM settings icon, then select Network, Advanced.
    2. Click the Port Forwarding button, and check for conflicts on the Host OS.
    3. If the Host OS is already using these ports please either select a different port for the Host Port, or delete the rule.
  10. The memory for the guest OS has been set to 2.5 GB, but this may be changed using the VirtualBox Manager if additional memory is available on the host OS.  For example, if the host machine has 8GB of memory, the memory for the guest OS may be set to 5GB.
  11. To use the VM, select the VM and click on Start. This will boot the VM and this will automatically log you in as the oracle user. Note: The password is oracle for the OS users oracle and root. All other passwords are set to welcome1, except for the seeded weblogic user in the JDeveloper integrated WebLogic Server which uses weblogic1 as the password.
  12. Once the VM is running, start JDeveloper by opening a terminal window, and typing:
    $> jdev &
    Manage the Fusion Middleware Services on the VM by opening a terminal window, and typing:
    $> vmctl
  13. Please review the README that is included on the oracle user's Desktop. The README is also set as the default home page for the Firefox browser.


Setup Instructions - Microsoft Windows XP


We have seen some success in running this virtual machine on Windows XP when the following steps are followed.
  1. Make sure Virtualization is enabled in your BIOS. Your CPU/s must be capable of running a 64-bit O/S, even if it is only running Windows XP now.
  2. Download Oracle VM VirtualBox. Before installing, right click the VirtualBox installer and click Properties check "Unblock". Then install VirtualBox. It is also REQUIRED to install the VirtualBox Extension Pack to get this VM working. Be sure to right click on the extension pack download, select Properties, and check "Unblock" before installing.
  3. Follow steps 2 through 10 as listed above.
  4. Still in the image's settings, go to System, Acceleration tab. Uncheck and check again "Enable VT-x".
  5. Follow the remaining steps 11 through 13 as listed above.
