README for Management Agent Installation using Agent RPM kit

INTRODUCTION

HOW IT WORKS

STEPS TO INSTALL THE AGENT USING THE RPM

**Cluster Nodes: Provide the list of hosts, which form the cluster.

Example 1: {"host1.example.com","host2.example.com"}
Example 2: {"host3","host4"}
Example 3: {"host5.example.com","host6"}

** These parameters are only required for the Clustered Agent Installations.

The interview phase will keep prompting for the mandatory parameters till they have been provided.

You may also wish to provide values for the following optional parameters which are presented during both standalone and clustered types of installations:

Agent User ID: If the agent install user does not exist, this optional parameter allows you to create an agent install user with a specific user id.

Agent User Password: If the agent install user does not exist, this optional parameter allows you to create an agent install user with a specific password. .

5) Silent installation of the management agent begins after the values above parameters are provided
by the user. The log files of the agent installations can be found at the following locations:

-- oraInventory/logs/installActions<timestamp>.log
-- <Agent Installation Directory>/agent10g/cfgtools/cfgfw/cfmlogs
-- <Agent Installation Directory>/agent10g/cfgtools/cfgfw/oracle.sysman.top.agent.<timestamp>.log

6) After the installation completes, run the following command:

"rpm -e emagent"

This command will update the rpm db only and will not erase the existing installation,

#-------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIMITATIONS WITH CLUSTER INSTALL
#-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that the agent rpm installs the cluster agent on the local node of the cluster only. To perform agent installations on all the hosts of the cluster repeat the installation steps on all the cluster nodes.

#-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MULTIPLE AGENT INSTALLATIONS
#-------------------------------------------------------------------------

For machines on which the Agent installations have been performed earlier using the rpm, the property files under /baremetalprov directory would be used to supply the installation parameters for later installations as well. One is required to carry out the same installations steps as mentioned above. But in this case the user would only be prompted for the OMS registration password as the other mandatory parameter values are taken up from the property files under /baremetalprov.

Please remove the property files under /baremetalprov in case a fresh set of installation parameters are required for newer installations.

#-------------------------------------------------------------------------
TROUBLESHOOTING
#-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Known Issue: Agent Installation fails with a message that "emagent package is already installed"

Resolution: Execute the following command before carrying out the installation steps mentioned above:

"rpm -e emagent"

#-------------------------------------------------------------------------
KNOWN LIMITATIONS
#-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The name of the 32-bit and 64-bit agent rpm is same. In order to stage them under a same location two different directories for each rpm would be required under a top level directory.

#-------------------------------------------------------------------------
USE WITH THIRD PARTY AUTOMATION TOOLS
#-------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you wish to integrate the rpm based agent installation with a third party tool then /baremetalprov directory be created along with the necessary properties files and mandatory parameters before the rpm installation begins. The rpm installation will then use the parameter values in these files for agent installation.

In case the /baremetalprov and the necessary files do not exist then an interview phase would be launched for getting the values of the mandatory parameters.

DIAGNOSIBILITY INFORMATION
#-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The log files of the agent installations can be found at the following locations:

-- oraInventory/logs/installActions<timestamp>.log
-- <Agent Installation Directory>/agent10g/cfgtools/cfgfw/cfmlogs
-- <Agent Installation Directory>/agent10g/cfgtools/cfgfw/oracle.sysman.top.agent.<timestamp>.log
