Oracle Automatic Storage Management Overview

Automatic Storage Management (ASM), a feature of the Oracle Database, provides Oracle customers with simplified storage management that is consistent across all server and storage platforms. With ASM, storage is managed as a small number of storage pools called ASM Disk Groups. Database related files are assigned to ASM Disk Groups and ASM manages the layout and data organization ensuring optimal performance and protection from storage hardware failure. ASM Disk Groups provide a convenient and easy means for consolidating storage and simplifying the administrative tasks previously required of DBAs and System Administrators. Key benefits of ASM include:

  • Simplifies and automates storage management
  • Increases storage utilization and agility
  • Delivers predictable performance, availability and scalability

With Oracle Database 12c, ASM extends the flexibility of ASM with an important set of new functionality collectively called Flex ASM. Flex ASM enhances the robustness and support for large clusters deploying Oracle RAC. Key benefits of Flex ASM include:

  • Reduces the number of ASM instances needed for large clusters
  • Provides ASM failover in the event of a server failure
  • Provides several integrity enhancements for Oracle’s engineered systems

Oracle ACFS/ADVM Overview

The Oracle ACFS/ADVM provides unprecedented simplicity in storage management, automation in provisioning and storage consolidation for all general purpose files including Oracle database files. Oracle ACFS/ADVM is a storage cloud infrastructure with resource pooling, network accessibility, rapid elasticity and rapid provisioning that are key requirements for cloud computing environments. The product includes:

  • Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM)

ADVM provides a common volume management service and a standard device driver interface for system administrators to manage across different platforms. ACFS and 3rd party file systems can use ASM Dynamic Volumes to create and manage file systems leveraging all the power and functionality of ASM features. Therefore, an ADVM volume may be easily resized to adapt to the storage need of a file system without any downtime.

  • Oracle ASM Cluster File System (ACFS)

A general-purpose POSIX, X/OPEN and Windows compliant file system designed for single node and cluster configurations. ACFS is managed using native operating system commands, ASM asmcmd and the Oracle Enterprise Manager. ACFS supports advanced functionality such as point-in-time copy snapshots, file system replication and tagging as well as file system security, encryption auditing.
