3 Oracle Rdb Database Entity Metrics

This chapter describes the different metrics associated with an Oracle Rdb Database entity target.

The following topics are discussed in this chapter:

3.1 Introduction

Oracle Rdb collects an immense amount of statistical and analytical information about database activity. Much of this information may be uploaded into the Enterprise Manager 10g management framework.

Within this management framework, most of the Oracle Rdb related Enterprise Manager web pages implemented to display statistical information use a three-column tabular format as shown in the Basic Oracle Rdb Statistics web page. In that format, column 1 shows the name of the metric; column 2 shows the statistical count for the metric; and column 3 shows the statistical count per transaction for the metric.

A few other web pages contain additional or different types of statistical information and therefore have their own unique formats.

Basic Oracle Rdb Statistics web page


In the sections below, each metric set is described. If the web page for the metric set uses the standard metric-count-per transaction tabular format, the individual metrics in the set are listed but no screen shot is provided since the display would be similar to the Basic Oracle Rdb Statistics web page .

The Frequency of Collection characteristic below indicates the initial default values at the time of installation. The installation procedure displays the list of metric groups and allows you to toggle the ON / OFF status of any of the groups. If you choose to enable a metric group, you are also prompted for how often the metric group statistics should be collected. The collection frequency can be between five and 120 minutes inclusive. A recommended default is always shown.

After installation, the Frequency of Collection for each Metric group can be adjusted or an entire group can be enabled or disabled as desired. To change any values from their installation values, run RDBOEM$SCRIPTS:SELECT_METRICS.COM. If you change the status of any metric group from ON to OFF or vice-versa, the agent will need to be stopped and restarted. Changing the frequency of existing collections do not require that the agent be restarted.

Summary Locking Statistics

Characteristic Definition
Purpose This screen monitors the number of enqueue lock requests for new locks that were rejected immediately because of a lock conflict. Oracle Rdb often requests a lock without waiting, and, when a conflict is detected, resorts to a secondary locking protocol to avoid unnecessary deadlocks. These numbers are one measure of lock contention.

Characteristic Definition
Purpose This screen displays the statistics for the TSNBLK object. The TSNBLK object contains the information on the last committed transaction. The number of TSNBLK objects is a function of the maximum number of users in the database; there is one TSNBLK object for every 28 database users (rounded up). For example, a database containing a maximum of 512 users would contain 19 TSNBLK objects.
