Company Background

Anubex is an industry leader, specialising in the renovation of large or complex legacy application software for companies and government organisations. We have a perfect track record of successful cross-platform migrations that goes back to the early 90s. Anubex uses specialised and extendable software conversion tools, and today is helping several Global 1000 companies reduce risks and costs in converting mission-critical applications to newer platforms.

Solutions Overview

The Anubex Migration Toolkit is an integrated collection of over a dozen software tools that are all used during a migration project and to assist in its planning. The toolkit has four categories of tools:

Analysis Tools
Anubex analysis tools analyse a system to generate reports on system components and system complexity. These tools are used before migration projects start and make it possible for Anubex or our partners to provide fixed-price, fixed-timeframe project plans.

Conversion Tools
The conversion tools from the Anubex Migration Toolkit automatically convert systems to a native web-enabled, relational database architecture. Host-based systems with character-based interfaces and flat file or ISAM data access are converted to the new architecture based on a rich set of options.

Test Scenario and Documentation Generation Tools
The tools in this category automate the management of technical testing and acceptance testing during projects and provide documentation and reports on the components of the new system for use by the client.

Maintenance Tools
The conversion to a web-enabled, relational database architecture is 100% native. There are no proprietary Anubex runtimes. Even though our clients can use standard Oracle development tools to further maintain the new system, maintenance tools of this category facilitate future system development.

Case Studies

French Ministry of Finance (DGCP)

Anubex has reached a first important milestone in a software migration project for the French Ministry of Finance (DGCP). The project involves the migration of data of an application called NDL from a legacy network database to more modern relational databases based on Oracle technology. The IDMS to Oracle migration is automated for almost 100% without requiring business disruption or retraining of the over 13 000 system users.

"NDL is not just a core application for DGCP. The system is also connected to a large number of other applications within the Ministry. Because of its tight integration we wanted to migrate to open and flexible technology that is adapted to our modern computing needs," according to Maryse Grosmann, project manager at the Ministry.

In order for the current developers to continue maintaining the system, the DGCP chose to deploy the migrated database on the same hardware as the original database, an IBM mainframe. The legacy application based on IDMS was replaced by a modern RDBMS from Oracle.

"With the help of Anubex conversion tools, companies save time and money by not having to redevelop their tried and tested software from scratch," according to Louis Heymans, managing director of Anubex.

One of the most important sites of DGCP is Bordeaux. There the regional NDL has been taken live with the new relational Oracle database, which is an important milestone in the project. 26 other regional sites remain, but these migrations will for the most part be reproductions of the Bordeaux template.

Centea (KBC Bank)

When considering the issue of the outdated and expensive system environment, Centea (KBC Bank) rather quickly came to the conclusion that one-on-one migration to their current technology standards was the best option. “Rewriting just wasn’t an option”, Jo Van Houte, Centea project manager states. “We were not looking for new end-user functionality, or flashy user interfaces: the application was just running on the wrong platform. The less changes we had to implement, the better. I considered every effort going into the functional side of the application during the transition to our current technology standards, an overhead. Our requirements came down to a fast, risk free, switch to UNIX platform with Oracle

Belgian carpet manufacturer migrates to Oracle and Unix with Anubex

Carpet manufacturer Lano Carpets began the development of their core information systems in 1981 on the Wang/VS platform.
By the time they made the decision to migrate to Unix and Oracle, their applications had grown in size to 2 million lines of code
with 300 database tables.

Lano originally considered a migration to a commercial ERP package but withdrew as the number of changes to the business
processes was too extensive. Seen the size and complexity of their applications, Lano executed a pilot project with Anubex
before committing to the full migration.

The pilot project consisted in the migration of 150 programs and was completed successfully in two months. The full migration
(2700 programs) was commissioned shortly afterwards and the migration, testing, and implementation of the full target applications
on AIX and the Oracle database took only nine months duration.

The final phase of the switchover was the data migration which took place during a weekend. According to the Director of Finance
and Administration at Lano, "Anubex succeeded in providing us a fully-migrated solution, performing according to our needs.
It was done within the predefined timeframe, without business interruption or surprises."
