Every organization committed to a long-term IT strategy faces periods when renewal is necessary to stay current with innovation and save on costs of maintaining outdated technology. Sometimes, though, just the word “modernization” can evoke dread among CIOs. Retired resources, limited documentation, employee re-training, code freezes, and the business cost of redirecting IT resources can cause organizations to put off implementing critical technology improvements.
SoftSol’s modernization strategy directly addresses these pain points, enabling organizations to quickly capture the benefits of modernization without disrupting business operations. This approach combines automated migration tools, a unique development methodology, and teams with more than 10 years of modernization experience.
SoftSol’s migration tools automatically extract legacy business logic and then replicate it accurately in the selected target platform. These tools are effective even in cases where there is no existing documentation or the original application architects are unavailable. Additionally, the tools can be configured to the customer’s preferred architecture stack, fully utilizing hardware, software, and personnel skillsets already present within their environment. SoftSol’s close partnership with technology manufacturers like Oracle provides invaluable input to ensure the selected platform delivers optimal performance and longevity.
SoftSol’s methodology facilitates web enablement, service oriented architecture, and integration with third-party applications. The unique modernization process also minimizes code freeze time, providing a seamless transition to the new platform often hardly noticed by business users that rely on the functionality.
Specific legacy platforms addressed by SoftSol’s proprietary automated tools include Mainframe (COBOL/ADABAS Natural), Powerbuilder, Oracle Forms, and Forte. SoftSol’s methodology is also effective for many other code, data, and upgrade modernization initiatives. These offerings also include SoftSol’s popular instant conversion tools which can be accessed at www.modernizenow.com.
Your legacy applications hold much of what makes your business successful. With effective modernization solutions, organizations can realize the benefits the latest technology without reinventing the business logic itself.
Project: Modernization of PathLIMS to Java/J2EE Technologies
Client Reference Letter:
The following letter was provided by the customer upon completion of the modernization initiative:
Jan. 6, 2010
PathLIMS (Pathology Laboratory Information Management System) is the legacy system Genentech uses to manage laboratory workflow and record experimental studies of pathology. Due to limitations imposed by an outdated technology platform, Genentech decided to migrate PathLIMS to the latest Java technologies in order to future-proof the critical system.
This is one of the largest IT initiatives Genentech has outsourced, so we were very careful in selecting a reliable vendor to carry out the work. We chose SoftSol based on positive references from multiple previous customers and proven automated migration tools. Their processes, policies, and facilities met our strict internal security requirements. SoftSol worked with Genentech to set up a secure, dedicated network line between our South San Francisco facilities and SoftSol’s offshore development center. This enabled both teams to work off shared servers, repositories, databases and test environments. Additionally, SoftSol implemented a separate sub network in its offshore facilities which restricted access to only authorized team members from Genentech and SoftSol.
SoftSol’s technical skill and mature methodology fostered a successful project execution. Their automation tools were accurate and efficient in migrating all of the legacy business logic to the new application. SoftSol identified project risks early in the process and set sensible risk mitigation strategies. Their onsite/offshore team displayed a high level of competence working with Genentech to design the application architecture and resolve any issues identified during the project lifecycle. SoftSol’s onsite project manager performed remarkably well in keeping us informed, incorporating our feedback, and ensuring the project stayed on track.
Overall, it was clear softSol’s management was fully committed to satisfying our expectations as a customer. It is a credit to their processes and integrity that SoftSol accommodated several requests from our team without asking for any increase to the overall fixed-bid price. Ultimately, SoftSol completed the 9000 person day project on time and on budget, achieving all of the performance and quality standards we had set for the initiative. One month after putting the application into production, we’ve received consistently positive feedback across the user base.
As a leading biotech company, it is vital to have advanced and secure IT systems to support our discovery and innovation. SoftSol has proven itself to be a reliable partner in helping Genentech to achieve this mission.
