| Solution |
The Unisys Enterprise Asset Modernization (EAM) program delivers a low-risk, high return set of services, software and platform solutions to transform critical legacy assets to a lower cost, more agile, open IT infrastructure. Through its unique Knowledge Mining and Abstraction (KMA) process, Unisys can analyze, assess, document, and implement a solution that leverages your existing technologies and deploys an open, flexible platform at the lowest risk possible. Because of its technical breadth and depth, as well as its mainframe heritage, Unisys is uniquely qualified to design, develop and deliver the complete EAM lifecycle and the Quality of Service (QoS) that you have come to expect with your legacy platform. Regardless of the client’s present or desired future state, Unisys can “get there from here,” providing technical expertise, integrated and proven enterprise-level solutions and change management over time.
The Unisys solution provides value by:
- Increasing competitive agility—by supporting new business goals and processes
- Ensuring uninterrupted operations—by allowing old and new applications to coexist during an evolutionary transition period
- Providing cost reduction—for application operations and maintenance by improving or replacing applications incurring extra cost
- Providing risk reduction—associated with legacy systems including loss of legacy skills
- Discovering and preserving intellectual property—hidden in existing applications and enable its reuse
- Providing a comprehensive end-to-end solution—by leveraging and integrating proven innovative technologies from Unisys and its partners
- Leveraging our award-winning approach—which offers a repeatable, proven methodology for enterprise transformation

| Case Studies |
KPN
KPN, a market leader in the Dutch telecommunications industry, operates a fixed telephony and mobile network in the Netherlands as well as mobile services in Belgium and Germany. KANVAS, its cable network connection address registration system, is one of KPN's most critical applications. It is used to monitor the entire network infrastructure, handling up to 100,000 transactions a day. It is also connected to other KPN applications and third parties through some 33 interfaces. Historically, KANVAS had been supported by two legacy mainframes and has evolved considerably since its creation. KPN needed to decide whether to continue running it on the old platform, look for an alternative packaged solution or to upgrade to a newer hardware platform with more flexibility and lower costs.
Unisys worked with KPN to design a solution that aligned its business objectives
with its technical requirements, to meet the company’s current and future needs. Based on this, an initial desk study was conducted, which revealed the areas for substantial savings and system improvements. Unisys then completed a proof of concept (POC) project using Intel-based Unisys ES7000 enterprise servers and Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. The POC illustrated the benefits of the open architecture, such as improved scalability and a fast return on investment with (ROI) of less than one year.
Morres Wonen
MW is a large Dutch home furnishings and decor retailer that had been using a IBM/Cobol/CICS mainframe system for most of its internal, mission critical applications. Looking to find a Quality of Service (QoS) comparable to it’s existing IBM mainframe, MW contacted Unisys to discuss and develop alternatives for the aging system that was costing them almost half a million Euros for software licensing (per annum) alone.
Unisys developed and delivered on a PoC (at the Unisys ETC) that leveraged the Micro Focus Enterprise Server and their “lift & shift” migration technology on a new ES7000 platform. The new Intel- based environment enabled MW to develop new functionality which integrated seamlessly with the existing applications and provided the necessary service levels to the end-users that they had grown accustom to. The joint project combined the expertise of partner Getronics with Micro Focus technology Unisys technical expertise to save a (projected) 3 million Euro over the next five years.
