From: Oracle Corporation

Minor Subject: Login exceptions may give clues as to why a login attempt failed.

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server.

This security advisory (BEA05-74.01) contains the corrected remedy for this vulnerability on WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 7.0 and 8.1. Please disregard security advisory BEA05-74.00, as this advisory, BEA05-74.01, supersedes it.

Threat level: High
Under certain circumstances, an attacker may be able to determine the cause of a failed authentication attempt.

Severity: High
An attacker may be able to use brute-force attacks to guess a password.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. Patches are available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:
I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions included in this advisory.

I. ADVISORY

All sites are susceptible to this vulnerability. In certain circumstances the login exception returned when a login was denied could provide clues about the cause of the failure. If this exception was visible to the user, a local or remote attacker could use this information to make brute force login attacks until the password was guessed.

The issue was resolved by always returning a consistent exception for failed login attempts.
