Security Advisory: (BEA05-75.00)

From: Oracle Corporation

Minor Subject: A patch is available to restrict access to JDBC connection pools from users granted the Monitor security role.

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express

Threat level: Low
Users must be granted the Monitor security role for the WebLogic Server Administration Console in order to access JDBC connection pools.

Severity: Medium
A user granted the Monitor security role may shrink or reset JDBC connection pools.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. An upgrade is available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with the highest degree of urgency and does everything possible to ensure the security of all customer assets. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions below.

I. Advisory

Only sites that use the Monitor security role are affected by this security vulnerability. A user granted the Monitor security role may be able to shrink or reset JDBC connection pools. This ability is contrary to what is stated in the following section of Securing WebLogic Resources:

http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs81/secwlres/secroles.html#1209332

The problem was resolved by restricting the shrinking or resetting of JBDC connection pools to users granted the Admin or Operator security roles.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express are affected by this vulnerability:
  • WebLogic Server 8.1 Service Pack 2 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 8.1 Service Pack 3 on all platforms

II. SUGGESTED ACTION

Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions:

WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 8.1
Upgrade to Service Pack 4
