Security Advisories and Notifications

Security Advisory: (BEA06-119.00)

From: Oracle Corporation

Minor Subject: Console applies incorrect JNDI policies.

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server

Threat level: Medium
A remote anonymous user may be able to incorrectly access resources in certain circumstances.

Severity: Medium
This issue can result in JNDI security policies being ignored in certain circumstances.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. A patch is available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:
I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions included in this advisory.

I. Advisory

This issue applies to all sites where an Administrator used the WebLogic Administration Console to add security policies to JNDI resources.

If an administrator sets security policies on JNDI resources using the Console, the resulting security policies did not properly protect the JNDI resources.

This patch resolves the issue by changing the Console to properly create JNDI security policies. After applying the advisory patch, Administrators should remove any JNDI policies that were explicitly added by Administrators and reapply them. In the case where Administrators did not add any custom JNDI security policies through the console, no action needs to be taken.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express are affected by this vulnerability

  • WebLogic Server 9.0, on all platforms.
