Minor Subject: Incorrect thread management may lead to server unavailability.

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server

Threat level: High
The server's availability can be compromised by a knowledgeable remote attacker.

Severity: High
Successfully exploiting the attack can result in the server eventually becoming unavailable to process requests.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. Upgrades and patches are available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Advisory

All sites that allow authentication using T3 may be vulnerable to this issue.

Certain sequences of events might result in a thread hanging which could eventually result in a server hang requiring a reboot.

This patch resolves the issue by ensuring that a dedicated thread is used where necessary.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express are affected by this vulnerability:

  • WebLogic Server 9.1, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 9.0, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 8.1 through Service Pack 5, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 7.0 through Service Pack 6, on all platforms

II. SUGGESTED ACTION

Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions.

WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express version 9.1

  • Use the Smart Update tool to install the patch for CR236939.

WebLogic Server 9.2 includes the functionality in this patch.

WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express version 9.0

  1. Download and apply the 9.0 GA Combo patch #7824963 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
    • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
    • Click Simple Search.
    • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
    • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
    • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
    • Click Go.
    • Click Download to download the patch.
  2. Download and apply the patch #7824843 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
    • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
    • Click Simple Search.
    • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
    • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
    • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
    • Click Go.
    • Click Download to download the patch.
  3. Place the jar for the patch at the end of the PATCH_CLASSPATH.

WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express version 8.1

  • Upgrade to Service Pack 6.

WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express version 7.0

  • Upgrade to Service Pack 7.
