Minor Subject: Patch available for SNMP implementation vulnerability

Product(s) Affected: BEA WebLogic Server and Express

This security advisory (BEA02-16.01) contains updated information in sections I and II. Specifically, patches are available to remedy the vulnerability. Please disregard SECURITY ADVISORY BEA02-16.00 as this advisory BEA02-16.01 supersedes it.


I. ADVISORY

Recently, CERT, the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute center of Internet security expertise, announced a potential security problem pertaining to implementations of the SNMP protocol

BEA has identified potential issues in the following products:
  • BEA WebLogic Server and Express 5.1
  • BEA WebLogic Server and Express 6.1, either standalone or as part of BEA Weblogic Enterprise 6.1.
Please note that the following BEA products have been tested using the CERT test suite and passed all the tests associated with the above advisory:
  • BEA Tuxedo (all versions, with or without SNMP Agent/BEA Manager)
  • WebLogic Enterprise (all versions except 6.1, with or without SNMP Agent/BEA Manager)
Please note that the following BEA products are not affected:
  • WebLogic Server 6.0, 4.51, 4.5 (SNMP not supported)
  • BEA MessageQ (all versions)
  • BEA Top End (all versions)
  • BEA Object Broker (all versions)

II. SUGGESTED ACTION

Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions:

Apply the appropriate Service Pack below:
  • Version: BEA WebLogic Server and Express version 6.1 standalone and as part of BEA WebLogic Enterprise 6.1 on all OS platforms
    • Apply Service Pack 2. When starting weblogic.Server, ensure that the patch is in front of the CLASSPATH. Also, in order to use the latest tools - snmpget, snmpgetnext, snmpwalk, snmptrapd ensure that the patch is in front of the CLASSPATH.

      Download and apply the patch #7825220 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      • Click Simple Search.
      • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      • Click Go.
      • Click Download to download the patch.
    • When Service Pack 3 becomes available, you should use that Service Pack instead of Service Pack 2 and this patch.


  • Version: BEA WebLogic Server and Express version 5.1 standalone and as part of BEA WebLogic 5.1 on all OS platforms
    • Apply Service Pack 11. When starting weblogic.SNMPAgent, ensure that the patch is in the front of the CLASSPATH. Also, in order to use the latest tools - snmpget, snmpgetnext, snmpwalk, snmptrapd ensure that the patch is in front of the CLASSPATH.

      Download and apply the patch #7825214 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      • Click Simple Search.
      • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      • Click Go.
      • Click Download to download the patch.
    • When Service Pack 12 becomes available, you should use that Service Pack and the SNMPAgent patch provided with Service Pack 12 instead of Service Pack 11 and this patch
