A problem was identified that could potentially allow an attacker to exploit a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. Patches are available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers’ systems. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Description

If you upgrade from WLS 8.1SP3 to a higher version and use auth-method as CLIENT-CERT, some webapps which were protected in WLS 8.1SP3 may be made available to an invalid user.

III. AFFECTED VERSIONS

The following versions of WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express are affected by this vulnerability
  • BEA WebLogic Server 10.0 released through Maintenance Pack 1 on all platforms
  • BEA WebLogic Server 9.2 released through Maintenance Pack 3 on all platforms
  • BEA WebLogic Server 9.1 on all platforms
  • BEA WebLogic Server 9.0 on all platforms
  • BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 Service Pack 4 through Service Pack 6, on all platforms

IV. SUGGESTED ACTION

Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions.

WebLogic Server version 10.0

  1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server 10.0 Maintenance Pack 1.
  2. Use the Smart Update tool to install the 10.0 MP1 patch for CR218639

WebLogic Server version 9.2

  1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server 9.2 Maintenance Pack 3.
  2. Use the Smart Update tool to install the 9.2 patch for CR218639

WebLogic Server version 9.1

  1. Use the Smart Update tool to install the 9.1 patch for CR218639

WebLogic Server 9.0

  1. Download and apply the 9.0 GA Combo patch #7824963 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
    • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
    • Click Simple Search.
    • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
    • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
    • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
    • Click Go.
    • Click Download to download the patch.
  2. Download and apply the patch #7823955 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
    • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
    • Click Simple Search.
    • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
    • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
    • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
    • Click Go.
    • Click Download to download the patch.
  3. Place the jar for the patch at the end of the PATCH_CLASSPATH.

WebLogic Server version 8.1

  1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server 8.1 Service Pack 6.
  2. Download and apply the patch #7823948 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
    • Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
    • Click Simple Search.
    • In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
    • Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
    • Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
    • Click Go.
    • Click Download to download the patch.
  3. Place the jar for the patch in the CLASSPATH before the weblogic.jar file.

Note: A new property has been added to provide compatibility with WLS 8.1 SP3. You need to specify
-Dweblogic.http.security.cert.protectResourceIfUnspecifiedConstraint=true
while starting up the server to achieve WLS 8.1SP3 behavior in the later versions of WLS.
