Security Advisories and Notifications

Security Advisory: (BEA03-42.00)

From: Oracle Corporation

Minor Subject: Patches available to protect Node Manager

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server and Express

Threat level: Low
It requires network access to the Node Manager's port

Severity: Low
It leads to the Node Manager crashing. This does not affect the server's health, but prevents the server from automatically rebooting and from being managed through the console.

Recently a customer identified a problem that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server and Express. Patches are available to correct this problem (see section II below). BEA treats such possibilities with the highest degree of urgency and does everything possible to ensure the security of all customer assets. As a result, we strongly suggest the following action:

I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions below.

I. Advisory

This vulnerability can occur when certain erroneous data is sent to the Node Manager's listen port causing the Node Manager to crash and not recover. This does not occur during normal operation of the Node Manager, only when erroneous data is sent to the port. This can sometimes occur during port scanning operations performed by tools such as nmap ( http://nmap.org/).

Sites that do not use the Node Manager or sites that have the Node Manager's listen port protected via another means (e.g.: a firewall) are not vulnerable to this exploit.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and Express are affected by this vulnerability
  • WebLogic Server and Express 8.1 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 7.0 and 7.0.01 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 6.1 on all platforms

II. SUGGESTED ACTION

Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions:

  • WebLogic Server and Express 8.1
