Security Advisory: (BEA03-28.01)

From: Oracle Corporation

Minor Subject: Patches available to prevent non-privileged accounts to access application resources

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server and Express

Threat level: medium

Severity: high

This security advisory (BEA03-28.01) contains updated information in section II. Specifically, patches are available for WebLogic Server 8.1 GA and WebLogic Server 7.0 Service Pack 2.

This vulnerability was not fully remedied in WebLogic Server 7.0 Service Pack 2 by the patch provided in Security Advisory BEA03-28.00.

The previously published remedies for WebLogic Server 6.0 and WebLogic Server 6.1 are not affected by this revision. Please disregard Security Advisory BEA03-28.00 as this advisory BEA03-28.01 supersedes it.

Previously S21sec and SPI Lab, the R&D team from SPI Dynamics, identified a problem that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server and Express. A further instance of this problem has been recently discovered from an internal source. Patches are available to correct this problem (see section II below). BEA treats such possibilities with the highest degree of urgency and does everything possible to ensure the security of all customer assets. As a result, we strongly suggest the following action:

      I. Read the following advisory.

      II. Apply the suggested action.

III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions below.

I. ADVISORY

This vulnerability was found in an internal protocol used both for copying data between servers. In some circumstances the protocol will allow non-privileged accounts to access application source code, modify applications, reconfigure the administrative settings of the server and in some installations, even alter the operating system files. Note that there are no configuration settings that will prevent this from happening. All servers are vulnerable.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and Express are affected by this vulnerability
  • WebLogic Server and Express 6.0 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 6.1 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 7.0 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 8.1 on all platforms
