Security Advisories and Notifications

Security Advisory: (BEA04-48.01)

From: Oracle Corporation

Minor Subject: Patches available to prevent compromise of user accounts

Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server and Express

Threat level: Low
Exploiting this vulnerability is difficult.

Severity: High
A successful attack could result in the compromising of an administrator's account.

This security advisory (BEA04-48.01) corrects a typographical error in Section I: "Cross-Site Scripting" has been changed to "Cross-Site Tracing". This correction does not change the remedies suggested in Advisory BEA04-48.00.

Recently a customer identified a problem that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server and Express. Patches are available to correct this problem (see section II below). BEA treats such possibilities with the highest degree of urgency and does everything possible to ensure the security of all customer assets. As a result, we strongly suggest the following action:

I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions below.

I. Advisory

By default, WebLogic Server responds to the HTTP TRACE request as specified in RFC 2616 ( http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2616.txt). Especially when combined with known browser vulnerabilities, HTTP TRACE can lead to the compromising of user accounts. This is sometimes referred to as "Cross-Site Tracing" or "XST". See the CERT advisory at http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/867593 for more information and the WhiteHat paper at http://www.cgisecurity.com/whitehat-mirror/WH-WhitePaper_XST_ebook.pdf for a complete description.

All sites are vulnerable to this problem.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and Express are affected by this vulnerability
  • WebLogic Server and Express 8.1, released through Service Pack 2, all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 7.0, released through Service Pack 4, all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 6.1, released through Service Pack 6, all platforms
  • WebLogic Server and Express 5.1, released through Service Pack 13, all platforms
