Overview

Oracle9iAS Portal is a component of Oracle9i Application Server. It provides an easy-to-use software framework for creating and maintaining Enterprise Portals, which are Internet or intranet sites that provide a personalized, single point of interaction with a company's suite of applications. Each portal page consists of content presented through one or more portlets.A portlet is a reusable, pluggable component that displays information from a data source. A portal page consists of content presented through one or more portlets. Portlets are areas within portal page that display the information. Portlets deliver the output in HTML/XML form to the portal page. The portlets in a portal page are provided by entities known as portlet providers. A portlet provider is an entity that owns and manages one or more portlets. Oracle9iAS Discoverer is a portlet provider to Oracle9iAS Portal, and provides two types of portlets: List of Database Workbooks portlet, Worksheet portlet.

The integration of Oracle9iAS Discoverer with Oracle9iAS Portal enables Discoverer users to share their analysis of data with virtually everyone with access to a portal page. When you publish a Discoverer portlet, you can allow authenticated or casual users access to a list of Discoverer workbooks, or Worksheets. Portal users can open a workbook from the list of published workbooks by simply clicking the workbook name. When Portal users select a workbook to open, Discoverer Viewer launches and the content of the workbook is made available to the portal user. Similarly, from a Worksheet portlet, you can launch Discoverer Viewer by clicking the View Worksheet link.

You use Oracle9iAS Portal to publish Discoverer content, so that portal users can take a look at the workbooks and worksheets that you have created.Whenever portal users open a workbook or a worksheet from a portal page, Discoverer Viewer is launched and information is made available to the users.
