There is that feeling when everything is working perfectly. When you know the data is protected. You know the service is guaranteed. The users are able to do their job, and you know they will be able to do it tomorrow, and the day after, and the year after that… The feeling when you know everything is done the way it is supposed to be done. It may have been hard work, but you know it’s done properly.
There is a point after which you just start to feel the system’s pulse. And the data is the blood of the system.
When I can sense that the system is working smoothly… this is the feeling that makes me happy.
I like the data. I can feel the data. I care about the data.
I’m mostly focused on the following areas:
- High availability - RAC, MSCS + FailSafe, HP ServiceGuard
- Disaster recovery - Data Guard, Standby database, Replication
- Backup strategies - not "scripts", but "strategies"
Outside of the database, I care about the workflow, usage patterns, user troubles and other things that may lead to a better system or a worse one. The database is the heart of the system; the data is the blood. But I know the system is something complex and the data in itself cannot do any good. I am training my ability to take a look at the whole system from a bird’s eye view.
But my passion is the data.
