MobileBIS Puts Sales Information in the Pocket

Sales executives in the field have a new tool for remote access to Oracle databases. MobileBIS, developed by La Crescenta, California-based BIS Computer Solutions, lets mobile PDA users access sales analysis, order entry, inventory, and other Oracle data over GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) or CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) mobile phone networks.

"We've developed a set of PDA applications that help salespeople access the information they want, quickly and concisely," says Michael Macho, account executive for BIS Computer Solutions. "Rather than having to dial in with a laptop and go through many screens to get information, data is easy to obtain."

MobileBIS applications are available through an application service provider model. Customers use their own mobile PDAs and data service and pay BIS Computer Solutions a monthly fee for the PDA applications and the service, which consists of formatting and channeling data from customer databases to the mobile phone network.

One of the strengths of the Oracle 10g product line is the ability to integrate the various systems in an enterprise—such as enterprise resource planning, warehouse management, order management, and financials—into a single business solution. Deloitte is focusing on those capabilities to serve its clients.

"We began in late May with a beta version, reviewing and testing it as an Oracle partner," explains Ian Patterson, senior manager of Deloitte's Oracle 10g initiative. "We started thinking about how we would use this with our clients and decided to put up a real-life scenario in our Chicago Service Line Technology Center." The scenario integrated a Comergent demand-chain application and an Oracle order-management application, and employed Oracle Database 10g for the integration and order processing. "We have a strong client base in discrete manufacturing, so we picked a heavy-machinery manufacturer as the subject," Patterson says. "We took areas where people typically go best-of-breed, and put it together using Oracle 10g. It's now a real working system that we could run at a heavy-machinery manufacturer."

Deloitte's service center has access to a wide variety of applications that can be linked using Oracle 10g integration, and Patterson believes that most client environments can be reproduced.

Select HP Customers Get Free Oracle Software

As part of a middleware distribution partnership, Oracle and HP are offering HP-UX and ProLiant (Windows and Linux) customers who purchased their systems since November 7, 2002, a free version of Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE (OC4J). Customers will receive both a full-use license and a five-incident support pack. "HP hardware and services, coupled with Oracle software, let us deliver superior solutions to customers far above and beyond what IBM can deliver as a single vendor," says Judson Althoff, director of business development in the Oracle9iAS Business Development Group.

Oracle Products Available Through Dell

Dell recently became a standard Oracle value-added reseller through Avnet, Inc., offering customers who want Oracle software on Dell hardware the cost benefits of Dell's direct sales model.
