BIO-key Biometric Security Supports Oracle Application Server 10g

BIO-key International, of Eagan, Minnesota, has announced that its finger-based biometric identification solutions, known as BIO-key Vector Segment Technology (VST) and WEB-key, will support Oracle Application Server 10g.

BIO-key's VST is available in a software development kit for embedding into a variety of security solutions, including border control, education, physical asset tracking, and network access control. VST complies with BioAPI standards, for efficient integration with other applications, and has a layered architecture allowing system architects to define levels of functionality. WEB-key is a finger identification solution for Web applications that allows administrators to physically secure access to computer networks and computers. It supports virtually all fingerprint-reading hardware, has counter measures against hackers, and supports diverse Web-client architectures.

FaceTime's Instant Messaging for Oracle Application Server Portal 10g

FaceTime Communications, a provider of security, management, and control solutions for instant messaging (IM) and other forms of real-time communications in the enterprise, has introduced IM Presence Manager for Oracle Application Server Portal 10g. With FaceTime-enabled presence aggregation capabilities running within Oracle Application Server Portal 10g, Oracle users will be able to detect the availability of an individual or project group and engage in real-time communication in the context of shared business applications and across a variety of enterprise or public instant messaging networks.

Adding presence awareness to Oracle Application Server Portal 10g allows users to detect and communicate with other users within the context of the subject matter. For example, portal users might detect and connect with an HR administrator in real time for answers to questions about specific benefits or policies.

"The integration of instant messaging and presence into business portals is a response to the business need to foster greater collaboration within remote work environments," says Robert Mahowald, research manager at market intelligence and advisory firm IDC. "The beneficiaries of 'contextual collaboration' relationships between vendors such as Oracle and FaceTime are clearly business users, who can work more productively in these presence-enabled portals to collaborate where and when they want, as opposed to toggling back and forth between application silos."

New Tool for Managing SQL Scripts, Browsing Database Structures

AquaFold has launched Aqua Data Studio, a tool that allows developers to create, edit, and execute SQL scripts and browse database structures. It is now available for free download from Aquafold.com. Aqua Data Studio provides an integrated database environment with a single consistent interface to all major relational databases, including Oracle8i and Oracle9i. With Aqua Data Studio, developers and database administrators can tackle multiple tasks simultaneously from a single application. The program is available for multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

Aqua Data Studio's Query Analyzer lets users work on database scripts with specific RDBMS syntax highlighting and autocompletion. It provides detailed client statistical information and multigrid results, and its graphical browsing capabilities show the structure and dependencies of database schema easily. It also can save query results in several formats, including HTML and XML.

The history is not simply interesting reading but also helps the reader understand the Java Community Process (JCP) and the role that developers have in the evolution of Java.

Schildt and Holmes also provide many examples, which range from language interpreters, Web crawlers, and e-mail subsystems to expression parsers, statistical tools, and financial applets. You'll even see how to apply Java to artificial intelligence. Each application can be used as-is or as a starting point for your own development.

Oracle DBA Guide to Data Warehousing and Star Schemas
By Bert Scalzo
Prentice Hall PTR
www.prenhall.com
ISBN 0-13-032584-8

Author Bert Scalzo draws on his experience working for EDS as the lead DBA for 7-Eleven's enterprise data warehouse team to put together a book that gives the reader best practices for implementing and managing a data warehouse on Oracle. Scalzo sets out to explain to data warehousing professionals what they need to change about the way they manage databases and how to use star schemas to run an efficient data warehouse.

This book serves as a detailed reference for the successful design, construction, tuning, and maintenance of star schema data warehouses in Oracle8i and Oracle9i. Rather than stepping the reader through a series of tutorials or case studies, Scalzo offers best-practices advice—advice that clearly comes from an expert. For example, while working at EDS, Scalzo managed the creation of 7-Eleven's data warehouse, which eventually grew to have billions of rows, was a true star schema design, had average and maximum report runtimes of seven minutes and four hours, respectively, and had base data and aggregations that were updated daily.
