Etagon ManageOn to Support
Oracle 10g
Etagon, a developer of data center solutions, will support Oracle Database 10g in the next major release of its ManageOn automation module, due in early 2004. Using server virtualization technology and dynamic resource allocation, ManageOn enables quick infrastructure setup, automatic provisioning, and deployment of clusters. ManageOn already supports Oracle9i Real Application Clusters.
ManageOn for Oracle 10g allows for virtual groupings of server, networking, and storage resources into logical entities called "virtual servers." Each virtual server can then service multiple instances of Oracle Database 10g and database services and dynamically allocate resources among virtual servers based on user-defined policies. ManageOn, which works with blade servers, also helps with storage preparation, patch management, IP virtualization for Oracle clients, monitoring, and fault management.
Application Security, Inc., Enhances DbEncrypt for Oracle
Application Security, Inc., a provider of proactive database security solutions, has announced DbEncrypt for Oracle, Version 2. The new product helps enterprises to protect core information assets without impacting the performance of business applications. The product can be used to protect customer information against security breaches and to meet specific federal and state regulatory requirements.
DbEncrypt for Oracle protects data at the source by encrypting information at the database column and row level. Enhancements to DbEncrypt for Oracle, Version 2 include expanded datatype encryption, such as VARCHAR2, CHAR, and NUMBER datatypes; template-driven installation and management of database encryption; and an optional enhanced recovery mechanism in which multiple logins have shared access to a single encryption key for a data column.
Optio Software Garners Supply Chain Management Certification
Optio Software, Inc., has achieved certification for Oracle Warehouse Management System (Oracle WMS)
and Oracle Mobile Supply Chain Application (Oracle MSCA).
The certification process for Optio's e.ComIntegrate offering required the successful demonstration of facilities such
as: visual design and mapping of Oracle data into Oracle WMS and Oracle MSCA labels, data passing using XML, inclusion of multiple format bar codes, support for a variety of printer types, and prepending of data with identifiers.
Optio has customers in manufacturing, healthcare, retail, distribution, and financial services.
InfoCyclone Releases Information-Retrieval Solution
InfoCyclone, builder of database performance enhancement products, has added smart information retrieval to its database-performance-enhancing appliance. InfoCyclone identifies resource-consuming queries and executes them in its own SQL engine, offloading the work from the database and improving application response time.
InfoCyclone's add-on appliance, which works with Oracle databases, is situated between the application and database servers in a three-tier architecture and between the database client and the database server in a client/server architecture. It monitors SQL traffic; identifies resource-intensive queries; redirects them to the InfoCyclone appliance; and executes them in main memory, using a proprietary SQL engine.

Oracle Regular Expressions Pocket Reference
By Jonathan Gennick and Peter Linsley
O'Reilly & Associates
www.oreilly.com
ISBN 0-596-00601-2
One of the most highly anticipated new features of Oracle Database 10g is support for regular expressions in SQL and PL/SQL. The database has long supported the ANSI-standard LIKE predicate for rudimentary pattern matching, but regular expressions take pattern matching to a new level. They provide a powerful way to select data that matches a pattern, as well as to manipulate, rearrange, and change that data.
This new pocket guide by experts Gennick and Linsley is part tutorial and part quick-reference. It provides introductory information for those who have never used regular expressions before, as well as those who have experience with Perl and other languages supporting regular expressions. The book describes Oracle's new support for regular expressions, including globalization support and differences between Perl's syntax and the POSIX syntax supported by Oracle 10g. It also provides a comprehensive reference, including examples, to all supported regular expression operators, functions, and error messages.
Oracle DBA Backup and Recovery Quick Reference
By Charlie Russel and Robert Cordingley
Prentice Hall PTR
www.prenhall.com
ISBN 0-13-140304-4
Backup and recovery are among the most critical and overlooked activities a DBA can perform. That's why authors Charlie Russel and Robert Cordingley, both experienced DBAs with multiple books to their name, set out to write this definitive and insightful text on backup and recovery.
The authors take pains to point out that backup and recovery is not a discrete set of activities, but a collection of methods, strategies, and procedures to protect the data in one's database and provide a means of recovery in the event of a disaster. That's why, in addition to spending a fair amount of time introducing the tools and utilities provided by the Oracle database, the authors also delve deeply into strategies and best practices, drawing on their years of experience as database administrators to fully explain all backup and recovery concepts and theories, in addition to tasks and activities.
The book includes information about the latest release of the database, Oracle Database 10g, with information on new features such as Data Pump.
