Quest Software Upgrades Toad
Quest Software has released version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle, its database-development tool. Toad for Oracle now analyzes Oracle PL/SQL and advises users on how code can be optimized. The new version of Toad for Oracle supports more SQL commands and features a script debugger for SQL*Plus scripts.
Version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle is available for Oracle Database Release 7.3.4 and higher, including Oracle 10g. It comes in three editions: Toad for Oracle, Toad for Oracle Professional, and Toad for Oracle Xpert.
CodeXpert, available in Toad for Oracle Professional, provides advice, rules, explanations, and references derived from the expertise of database gurus Steven Feuerstein and Bert Scalzo.
Xpert SQL Tuning, part of Toad for Oracle Xpert, offers SQL tuning and schema-change advice, plus a new Index Simulator that emulates creating an index with no impact on the target system.
All editions provide a compatible and supportive Oracle SQL execution engine and an enhanced user interface.
Yosemite and Exabyte Team for Oracle Backup and Recovery
Yosemite Technologies and Exabyte have entered into an OEM partnership in which Yosemite's backup software solution, TapeWare XE, will be bundled with Exabyte's VXA-2 PacketLoader Tape Libraries.
Yosemite TapeWare, a multiplatform solution, has a three-tier modular, scalable architecture and performs data backup and recovery by way of up to 240 concurrent data streams. It supports bare-metal recovery on Oracle.
Exabyte's VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x10 1U has 10 cartridge slots, enabling a capacity of 1.6TB of compressed data (160GB per cartridge) in a one-unit form factor. The PacketLoader 1x10 includes a bar-code reader, random library operation, a field-replaceable drive, and optional remote management. The VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x7 is a desktop unit with 7 cartridge slots and a capacity of 1.1TB of compressed data. Both PacketLoaders offer a data-transfer rate of 43.2GB per hour and include Exabyte's second-generation VXA-2 Packet Drive.
Broadbeam Launches Middleware for Making Applications Mobile
Broadbeam has introduced MSS Smart IP 3.0, which allows existing applications to run more effectively and efficiently over a variety of wireless networks. By synchronizing Oracle9i Lite databases with Oracle databases, MSS Smart IP can reduce data-transmission time by 30 percent for a small database and 90 percent for a large one.
MSS Smart IP optimizes applications in three ways: First, it reduces the amount of data the application sends and receives over the wireless network; intelligent protocol agents (IPAs) decrease the amount of data further for specific applications or protocols. Second, its virtual IP-address technology enables server-side applications to securely push data to clients. Finally, MSS IntelliSwitchinga component of Broadbeam's Uni-Fi Networking Initiativeautomatically connects and seamlessly switches between Wi-Fi and wireless WANs, with application persistence.
Security is provided in one of two ways: Enterprises can use their existing virtual private network (VPN) scheme or can employ MSS Smart IP's system, which uses AES encryption and LDAP/RADIUS user authentication. MSS Smart IP's method provides security equivalent to a corporate VPN's but is designed for wireless environments.

Mastering Oracle SQL
By Sanjay Mishra and Alan Beaulieu
O'Reilly
ISBN: 0596006322
According to authors Mishra and Beaulieu, few database administrators truly master SQL, an error they hope to correct with their book on using SQL in the context of Oracle. The book provides all of the basics you'd expect to find in an introductory text on SQL, but because the information is expertly presented with the Oracle DBA in mind, those same DBAs will find this an invaluable text.
The authors focus on the areas in which Oracle Database excels, including regular expressions, inter-row calculations, recursive queries, analytic and advanced GROUP BY functions, and the SQL/XML standard. The authors provide real-world examples that serve to explain the SQL concepts and uses presented in the book3.
A key feature of the book is its differentiation of SQL features for the various releases of Oracle Database. The book, updated for Oracle 10g, points out new SQL features found only in Oracle9i and Oracle 10g.
