Lumigent Technologies Introduces Data-Auditing Solution

Lumigent Technologies has unveiled Entegra for Oracle, a data-auditing product that maintains complete records of data access and use through a comprehensive, perpetual database-audit trail.

Entegra for Oracle can provide end-to-end integrity of financial transactions for regulatory compliance, detect and analyze breaches in user and application behavior, monitor critical data for unauthorized as well as approved changes, validate and monitor policies and controls, and rapidly respond to violations and vulnerabilities.

The Entegra Report Server is based on Crystal Enterprise, which is shipped with Entegra for Oracle.

TECSys Updates ConsoleWorks Remote Support Application

TECSys Development Inc. (TDi) has released ConsoleWorks 2.0, a new version of its remote support application. ConsoleWorks can automatically execute operator-specified actions—such as stop, start, run, reconfigure, load firmware, and reboot-when it detects a predefined event on a monitored device. It can also telephone, page, or e-mail appropriate personnel when such events happen.

TDi has developed an intelligent event module for ConsoleWorks that monitors Oracle8i and Oracle9i databases, scanning for events and using pattern matching to identify potential problems. Oracle Intelligent Event Module also catches security subsystem messages.

ConsoleWorks can be accessed via a Web browser. The product is aimed at the energy-management, government, healthcare, and finance markets.

DataDirect Introduces New Drivers Supporting Oracle 10g

DataDirect Technologies has released new DataDirect Connect drivers: DataDirect Connect for JDBC release 3.4 and DataDirect Connect and DataDirect Connect64 for ODBC release 5.0.

DataDirect Connect for JDBC takes advantage of JDBC features such as connection failover support and client-side load balancing across all databases. These features enhance support for Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) 10g.

DataDirect Connect for ODBC, based on the 3.52 ODBC specification, includes clientless-wire-protocol technology, which eliminates the need for separate client-library software and simplifies deployment and maintenance. DataDirect Connect64 for ODBC has the same features but is built for 64-bit architectures. The new versions add support for grid computing, new Oracle 10g data types, and Oracle RAC.

Effective Oracle Database 10g Security by Design
By David Knox
McGraw-Hill/Osborne's Oracle Press
ISBN: 0072231300

This book by Oracle Information Assurance Center chief engineer David Knox not only provides detailed information about the security features of the Oracle database but also contains information on best practices for security, an inventory of Oracle-recommended best practices, and tips and tricks for keeping your data secure. The book even contains guidelines for keeping data secure in an enterprise grid computing environment.

Knox writes about identity management and how to use Oracle's many security products to create a flexible, foolproof identity management system. He discusses the identification and authentication features of the Oracle database in clear, straightforward prose. Finally, Knox discusses the database's fine-grained auditing features, again providing relevant scenarios and usage examples, making this a must-have text for any security administrator or DBA concerned about data security.

Oracle High Performance Tuning for 9i and 10g
By Gavin Powell
Elsevier Digital Press
ISBN: 1555583059

According to independent consultant and certified Oracle expert Gavin Powell, there are three parts to tuning an Oracle database: data modeling, SQL code tuning, and physical database configuration. Powell covers all three in this succinctly written tuning guide. He begins by discussing how to tune a data model, which involves normalization and de-normalization. According to Powell, poor data modeling can have a most profound effect on database performance, because all SQL code is constructed from the data model, and therefore he spends a significant portion of the book discussing this topic.

Next, Powell moves on to tackle the tuning of poorly written SQL code, providing useful tips and insights. Finally, he discusses physical database tuning, which involves hardware resource usage, networking, and various other Oracle considerations such as configuration and file distribution. Powell's knowledge of the Oracle database and clear instruction make this a valuable addition to any DBA's tuning library.
