Project MegaGrid Enters New Phase, Cisco Joins

Phase II of Project MegaGrid, sponsored by Dell, EMC, Intel, and Oracle, has produced dynamic provisioning best practices to manage heavy workloads in a grid-computing environment. White papers from the initiative are now available for download.

Begun in December 2004, Phase I of Project MegaGrid focused on the scalability and performance of a comprehensive database, server, and networked storage configuration to support a single application. Phase II focused on dynamic provisioning—the seamless extension, allocation, or repurposing of server and disk resources across midtier, database, and storage tiers—to support an increased workload.

In Phase III, the Project MegaGrid infrastructure will be scaled to 128 nodes with an emphasis on business continuity and end-to-end automation and management. Cisco Systems has joined the project and is developing best practices for designing, optimizing, and managing the network for clustering and scalability in large enterprise data centers. Project MegaGrid will employ data-center networking products, including Cisco Catalyst 6500 series Ethernet switches, Cisco InfiniBand switches for high-density server connectivity, and Cisco MDS 9000-family switches for SAN connectivity.

Oracle and HP Announce "Optimize for Agility"

Oracle and HP have announced "Optimize for Agility," an engineering, services, and marketing initiative for delivering rapid deployment, integrated management, and dynamic provisioning capabilities to customers worldwide.

Optimize for Agility consists of service and product innovations, including the Oracle 10g grid platform, HP OpenView management solutions, and Oracle Enterprise Manager. These tools exchange events and operational information, allowing better root-cause analysis and problem solving across a grid infrastructure. In this environment, customers can better identify, allocate, and reallocate IT resources to adjust to changes in workloads, technology advancements, and business requirements.

More than 950 Oracle-trained HP Services specialists will provide service and support. Customer Solution Centers in Atlanta, Georgia, and Reading, U.K., have been enhanced for hands-on customer interaction with tools and technology. The two companies will also develop reference architectures as guidelines for deployment of an Oracle grid-computing infrastructure.

Three Partners Engaged to Extend Reach to SMBs

Oracle has inked three distribution agreements intended to increase Oracle's reach in the small-to-midsize-business (SMB) market.

Partners Complete Application Integration Validation

To help customers focus on their businesses—so they needn't concentrate on the chore of application integration—Oracle PartnerNetwork recently launched the Application Integration Architecture for Partners. In it, Oracle conducts a detailed review of a product's architectural design and executes a battery of tests to validate that an application integrates well with the complete range of Oracle offerings. Products are tested to ensure compliance with standard integration methodologies such as BPEL, Web services, XML/EDI, and other published and approved application-programming interfaces. Several Oracle partners have announced completion of the Application Integration Architecture for Partners.

Citrix Systems, a provider of access-infrastructure solutions, has had its Citrix Access Suite version 4.0 validated with Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne version 8.11. Citrix achieved Oracle integration validation for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne by undergoing tests demonstrating compatibility between the two products, using a test plan developed and executed at Oracle's Denver, Colorado, facility. The two companies also successfully validated the Citrix Access Suite with JD Edwards OneWorld XE SP23.

HighJump Software, a 3M company, provides supply-chain-execution (SCE) solutions. Oracle has validated integration between HighJump's solutions and Oracle's PeopleSoft Enterprise Supply Chain Management 8.9. By linking HighJump Warehouse Advantage and Data Collection Advantage solutions with PeopleSoft 8.9, HighJump now offers the first validated integration of SCE software with PeopleSoft. The integration team validated more than 50 transactions and integration touch points between PeopleSoft's and HighJump's solutions through PeopleSoft's standard XML interface. HighJump is the only Oracle Certified Software Partner offering validated and tested integrations for all releases of PeopleSoft Enterprise Supply Chain Management, starting with version 7.5.

OuterBay, a provider of information lifecycle management solutions for applications and databases, has successfully completed validation of its Application Data Management (ADM) Suite with Oracle E-Business Suite. OuterBay is one of the first partners to achieve multiple validations with Oracle's application offerings, having already achieved validation of OuterBay ADM Suite with PeopleSoft Enterprise.

Other partners that have completed integration include Applimation, an application lifecycle management vendor; Infosys, a consulting and IT services company; and Taxware, a developer of tax calculation and compliance systems.

Avnet, a longtime value-added distributor of Oracle technology and a Certified Advantage Partner, will create a new business unit and build a network of solution providers to market, sell, implement, and support Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition and JD Edwards applications. This initiative will provide a one-stop source for SMBs seeking software and hardware, business and technology consulting, rapid implementation and support services, and training, certification, and financing.

Ingram Micro will offer its resellers Oracle's complete line of technology products. Oracle and Ingram Micro each will deploy a dedicated staff to support new resellers, and Ingram Micro will recruit hundreds of qualified value-added resellers (VARs) to implement Oracle technology in the SMB market.

Tech Data will use its logistics expertise, marketing resources, and customer base to drive sales of Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware by its SMB resellers. As part of the agreement, Tech Data will recruit incremental resellers of Oracle offerings to provide solutions for SMB customers. Both companies will dedicate staff and marketing resources to support new resellers.

EDS and Oracle Expand Partnership

EDS and Oracle will expand their long-standing partnership by integrating core service offerings and providing joint application management, hosting, and modernization services. EDS, an Oracle Certified Advantage Partner, and Oracle, a member of the EDS Agility Alliance, have seen tremendous growth in these service areas and expect that their integrated offerings will further accelerate that growth.

EDS will utilize Oracle On Demand in several areas, including application-hosting managed servers, enterprise application management, and applications modernization. The companies' joint customers will get a single service-provider relationship with EDS, with clear accountability for hosting and application-management needs for their entire applications portfolio. This offering is available now on a controlled-release basis and is scheduled for general availability in the second quarter of 2006. EDS will continue to provide hosting and application-management services for non-Oracle applications, including third-party independent software vendors (ISVs) and custom applications.

IBM and Oracle Announce Agreements for Applications

IBM and Oracle will jointly enable IBM's WebSphere products to be an additional runtime environment for Oracle Fusion. Oracle previously announced support of its PeopleSoft and JD Edwards applications running on WebSphere through 2013 and will continue to support IBM DB2 while evaluating its role in Oracle Fusion.

IBM and Oracle also announced a new IBM eServer solution for Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and JD Edwards World, aimed at better managing core business operations of small-to-midsize businesses. The offering is available on the i5 520 models of IBM's midrange server, which offers rapid deployment and ease of administration.
