Oracle Systems Management Capabilities Extended Through Partner Plug-Ins

In response to overwhelming interest among partners, customers, and developer communities to provide broader management of enterprise grid environments, Oracle has launched the Oracle Enterprise Manager Partner Initiative. With partner plug-ins, system administrators can use Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control Release 2 to monitor the availability, performance, and configuration of hardware, software, and applications—including non-Oracle systems—from a central location.

The plug-ins leverage Oracle Grid Control's monitoring and management features, including alerts, automatic performance data collection, blackouts, and templates. Management connectors enable the bidirectional exchange of information between Oracle Enterprise Manager and other management solutions.

Plug-ins enabling Oracle Grid Control to deliver diagnostic and management capabilities are now available for versions of BEA Systems WebLogic, F5 Networks BIG-IP Server Load Balancer, IBM WebSphere, and NetApp fabric-attached storage systems. Plug-ins for Check Point Software Technologies' VPN-1 Pro and Juniper Networks Firewalls are planned.

Leading ISVs Support Oracle Database 10g on Windows

In May 2004, Oracle joined the Microsoft Visual Studio Industry Partner program to offer better integration between Oracle Database and Visual Studio .NET 2003. Since 1985, Oracle has helped customers build mission-critical database systems on Microsoft platforms. Now, Oracle partners—including Autodesk, Bottomline Technologies, FileNet, InforSense, Spotfire, Tom Sawyer Software, UGS, and Waters—and other independent software vendors (ISVs)—including Amcom Software, ARGO Data Resource, Business Objects, Computrition, Fair Isaac, FAMIS Software, Micro Focus, Park City Group, PCI Geomatics, Pegasystems, and Sensitron—are providing business solutions built on Oracle Database 10g for Microsoft Windows.

With Oracle Database 10g on Windows, ISVs and customers can take full advantage of Oracle Automatic Storage Management, Oracle Application Express, Oracle Real Application Clusters, Transparent Data Encryption, and XML Query. "The Windows platform is very important to many of our customers and partners," says Andy Mendelsohn, senior vice president of database server technologies at Oracle. "By deploying applications built using Oracle Database 10g on Windows, our partners can take full advantage of grid computing and other features uniquely offered by Oracle. And our customers benefit from a wider choice of highly available, scalable, and secure business solutions."

Unisys and Oracle Join Forces on Global Initiatives

Certified Advantage Partner Unisys and Oracle are working together on global initiatives in several areas, including financial services, outsourcing solutions, the public sector, and enterprise computing. The two companies' joint solutions are energized by the Unisys 3D Visible Enterprise (3D-VE) strategy, which enables companies to link business strategy, processes, and IT requirements throughout an enterprise and determine the impacts and costs of strategic decisions before making them.

Joint solutions addressing retail banking, payments, customer relationship management (CRM), and other areas will draw on both companies' strengths in financial services. Unisys expertise in financial payments, combined with Oracle database capabilities, can help banks better manage payments across product channels, identify new revenue streams, and improve customer service.

The joint outsourcing initiative focuses on mapping and integrating Oracle and Unisys service definitions for seamless delivery of solutions in network and security management, asset management, and call center support.

The public sector Citizen Interaction Centers solution being developed by the two companies will provide a core CRM application tailored for government agencies. The public uses Citizen Interaction Centers—also known as "311" centers, for their telephone number—to obtain nonemergency government services.

On the enterprise computing front, Unisys and Oracle will develop application-specific proof points, testing benchmarks, sizing guides, and validated configurations for Oracle databases and applications running in both Linux and Microsoft Windows environments.

"This focus on global initiatives with Oracle opens up new opportunities for Unisys and our clients around the world," says Jean Michel Fournier, vice president and general manager of worldwide alliances at Unisys. "Our companies share a vision of helping clients build visible and secure business operations." Oracle is among an exclusive list of the world's leading technology providers partnering with Unisys to deliver customer solutions that leverage the power of 3D-VE.

FlexFrame Brings Grid Computing to the Data Center

Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Oracle have announced FlexFrame for Oracle, an end-to-end infrastructure for Oracle Grid Computing. FlexFrame for Oracle brings together preconfigured and certified server, storage, and software components, along with automation, virtualization, and deployment technologies, plus related services. FlexFrame for Oracle is targeted at organizations that require continuous availability and whose application usage varies over time. Addressing the J2EE applications market, FlexFrame for Oracle enables companies to virtualize the software stack and run application and database services on any server in a grid at any time. This is more efficient than running a "server farm," with separate servers accommodating peak usage of each application. FlexFrame for Oracle employs Adaptive Services Control Center (ASCC), Fujitsu Siemens Computers' solution for automating server operation. ASCC software monitors all servers in a grid based on agents and standardized Simple Network Management Protocol traps. Should changes occur—for example, should a server fail—ASCC's embedded decision engine triggers corrective actions according to predefined rules. FlexFrame for Oracle also employs Netboot, a tool for loading the software images of operating systems and applications needed to bring Fujitsu Siemens PRIMERGY Blade servers into operation.

Oracle chooses Solaris 10 as Preferred Open Source 64-bit Environment

Oracle has chosen the Solaris 10, Sun Microsystems' multiplatform, open source operating system, as its preferred development and deployment platform for most 64-bit architectures. Solaris 10 will be used throughout Oracle's development organization, and Oracle will release and ship 64-bit versions of all Oracle products on Solaris prior to, or simultaneously with, release on other operating systems.

With this selection, Oracle technologies and applications will take full advantage of the advanced features of the Solaris OS, such as Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), Solaris Containers, and TCP/IP performance enhancements. Solaris supports more than 539 hardware platforms, providing the broadest choice of hardware in the industry. Sun has distributed more than 3 million free Solaris licenses in the past year.
