.NET Offerings Support Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and ADO.NET 2.0
A new version of Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET (ODT) enables tight integration between Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Oracle Database. The free plug-in is available for download on Oracle Technology Network. A new version of Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) that supports ADO.NET 2.0, Microsoft's standard for data access, is also available.
The previous version of ODT enabled developers to use Visual Studio .NET 2003 to develop and deploy Oracle Database applications. Adding support for Visual Studio 2005 will increase productivity for developers building Microsoft .NET Framework-based applications and will continue to enable developers to take full advantage of Oracle Database 10g. The new set of tools also supports fully integrated debugging of PL/SQL from within Microsoft Visual Studio, including the ability to seamlessly step directly from .NET code into PL/SQL stored procedures or functions.
ODP.NET is incorporating several capabilities in support of ADO.NET 2.0 that make it easier for developers to access information from the database. Features such as XML support, database change notification, and connection pool management application-programming interfaces are already included in Oracle Database 10g Release 2. Oracle plans to support objects/ADTs, provider factories, metadata schema retrieval, and the connection string builder, which are all part of ADO.NET 2.0.
Oracle SQL Developer Eases Database Development
Oracle SQL Developer is a free graphical tool for performing basic database development tasks. Essentially a graphical version of SQL*Plus, Oracle SQL Developer will connect to any Oracle database schema (Release 9.2.0.1 and later) to browse, edit, create, drop, and otherwise manipulate database objects. It also allows users to run SQL and scripts; load, edit, execute, and debug PL/SQL; manipulate and export data; and view, create, and customize reports. Oracle SQL Developer runs on Windows and Linux and is available for download on Oracle Technology Network.
Extend .NET IT Systems with Oracle SOA Suite
Oracle's new service-oriented architecture (SOA) platform, the Oracle SOA Suite, provides organizations with the tools and technologies needed to transition to an SOA and seamlessly connect, extend, and evolve their existing IT systems to rapidly deliver new business services. The suite includes hot-pluggable integration and SOA components of Oracle Fusion Middleware, which means they are certified for deployment with non-Oracle middleware from companies like Microsoft, IBM, and BEA. Using the Oracle SOA Suite, organizations can easily extend and evolve their architectures rather than replace existing investments as new technologies develop.
Components of Oracle SOA Suite include Oracle BPEL Process Manager, Oracle Enterprise Service Bus, Oracle Web Services Manager, Oracle Business Rules Engine, and Oracle Business Activity Monitoring. The suite also includes Oracle JDeveloper 10g, which provides an integrated development environment for creating and composing applications and also acts as a unified toolset for all components in the Oracle SOA Suite.
Oracle SOA Suite is available on Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003, and it will support Microsoft Vista when that platform becomes available. The suite can utilize Microsoft Active Directory as the underlying identity store or directory. Oracle SOA Suite can also natively take advantage of Microsoft Cluster Services and Network Balancer to address high-availability and scalability requirements. It also supports .NET Web services and provides agents for .NET Web services to enforce security policies.
Oracle Enterprise Manager Offers Extensive Windows Support
Oracle has extended the capabilities of Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control (Oracle Grid Control) to enable joint Microsoft and Oracle customers to manage their systems, applications, and services with a single, integrated solution. Oracle Grid Control's support for the Microsoft .NET Framework and Windows Server System, including Microsoft SQL Server, reduces the cost and complexity of managing joint Microsoft and Oracle environments.
Seven new management plug-ins are available that give Oracle Grid Control monitoring, diagnostic, and configuration analysis capabilities for .NET and Windows Server System. Plug-ins are available for Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft BizTalk Server, Microsoft Commerce Server, Microsoft Internet Information Services, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server, .NET, and Microsoft SQL Server. The plug-ins are priced at US$1,500 per CPU where a Microsoft product is running.
Oracle Fusion Middleware Delivers Enhanced Support for Microsoft
Oracle Fusion Middleware provides support for Microsoft technologies, including the Windows Server System, Microsoft .NET Framework, and Microsoft Office. Many organizations rely on a mix of vendor technologies throughout their computing environments, and a significant number of Oracle Fusion Middleware customers run on Windows and deploy a combination of Java and .NET-based applications and services.
Oracle has delivered a best-practices
guide for developers to use Oracle Fusion Middleware to leverage Microsoft Office as a "front end" to enterprise applications. Enterprises can increase productivity by reducing duplicate data entry and can improve total cost of ownership by minimizing specialized training for disparate systems.
"Oracle is dedicated to providing customers with the market's most extensible, open middleware offering to help ensure they derive the most value from their business applications," says Frank Knifsend, senior director of product management, Oracle Fusion Middleware. "Our extended support for Microsoft strengthens an organization's ability to leverage Oracle Fusion Middleware's best-in-class, standards-based middleware components regardless of their Microsoft investments."
